Apple Ends Software Support for 16 Older iPads, Macs, Watches, and Apple TVs

· · 2 min read

Apple is ending software support for 16 older devices, including select iPads, Macs, Apple Watches, and Apple TVs, with the release of new operating systems. These devices will no longer receive critical updates or new features.

Apple has announced the discontinuation of software support for 16 older models across its iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, and Apple TV product lines. This change coincides with the preview of new operating systems—iPadOS 27, watchOS 27, macOS 27 Golden Gate, and tvOS 27—at WWDC 2026, signaling an upgrade requirement for many users.

The affected devices will no longer receive the latest software features, crucial security updates, or performance enhancements, potentially leaving them vulnerable and outdated. This move by Apple typically aims to push users towards newer hardware that can fully leverage advancements in its operating systems, often due to increased processing power or specific chip requirements.

Impacted Apple Watch Models

Five Apple Watch models are losing support for watchOS 27. These include the:

  • Apple Watch Series 6
  • Apple Watch Series 7
  • Apple Watch Series 8
  • First-generation Apple Watch Ultra
  • Second-generation Apple Watch SE

The new watchOS 27 reportedly requires Apple's S9 or S10 chipsets to run its latest performance and AI-driven features, which these older models lack.

iPad Devices Losing Support

Several iPad models will not be updated to the latest iPadOS 27. Apple now mandates at least an A14 Bionic chip or newer for its latest generation software. The impacted iPads are:

  • Third-generation iPad Air
  • Third-generation 12.9-inch iPad Pro
  • First-generation 11-inch iPad Pro
  • Eighth-generation iPad
  • Fifth-generation iPad mini

Macs and Apple TVs Affected

macOS 27 Golden Gate marks a significant shift, as it is the first macOS version exclusively supporting Apple Silicon Macs. Consequently, several Intel-powered Mac models will not receive this update:

  • MacBook Pro 2019
  • MacBook Pro 2020
  • iMac 2020
  • Mac Pro 2019

Additionally, older Apple TV devices are also on the list, with tvOS 27 only available for newer models. The devices losing support are:

  • 2015 Apple TV HD
  • 2017 Apple TV 4K

Users owning any of these 16 Apple devices should consider upgrading to maintain access to current software features, security protocols, and optimal performance.
