Apple Pay Set for October India Launch, Starting with Axis Bank Credit Cards

· · 3 min read

Apple Pay is reportedly preparing its long-awaited India launch in October, initially supporting Axis Bank credit cards. This entry into a UPI-dominated market marks a significant expansion for Apple's card-based payment system.

Apple Pay's Long-Awaited Entry into India

After years of anticipation, Apple Pay is reportedly set to launch in India as early as October, according to a Reuters report. The mobile payment service, first introduced in the US in 2014, is expected to begin its rollout by supporting Axis Bank credit cards. India will become one of the latest major markets to receive Apple Pay, which is already available in over 90 countries and regions worldwide.

The move comes as Apple continues to expand its footprint in India, bolstered by a growing iPhone user base and increased local manufacturing efforts. Counterpoint Research, cited by Reuters, indicates that Apple's smartphone market share in India has doubled to 8% since 2022.

Navigating India's UPI-Dominated Landscape

Apple Pay's arrival in India presents a unique scenario, as it enters a market profoundly shaped by the Unified Payments Interface (UPI). Introduced by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) in 2016, UPI has revolutionized digital payments through direct bank-account transfers, QR codes, and various payment apps.

Today, UPI accounts for a staggering 84% of India's digital payments volume, making it the dominant payment method. This differs significantly from many global markets where card-based contactless payments were primary when Apple Pay launched. India's robust account-to-account payment ecosystem meant Apple faced a different environment for its tokenized card system.

Strategic Partnership with Axis Bank

The initial focus on Axis Bank for the Apple Pay India launch is strategic. Axis Bank is a significant player in the country's credit card market, holding 16.26 million active credit cards as of July, making it the fourth-largest issuer, according to RBI data cited by Reuters. Apple reportedly plans to gradually onboard other major lenders, with discussions already underway with banks like ICICI and HDFC.

What Apple Pay Offers Indian iPhone Users

For Indian iPhone and Apple Watch users, Apple Pay promises enhanced convenience and security for card transactions. Users can add supported credit cards to their Apple Wallet and make payments by simply tapping their device at compatible contactless terminals, authenticating purchases using Face ID or Touch ID.

Apple's tokenization system replaces actual card details with a device-specific account number, ensuring that merchants do not receive the user's real card number, thus enhancing privacy and security. The Reserve Bank of India's recent allowance for biometric authentication in card payments further streamlines the experience for services like Apple Pay.

However, it's crucial to understand that Apple Pay is not a direct competitor or replacement for UPI apps like Google Pay or PhonePe. Unlike UPI, which facilitates direct bank-account transfers, Apple Pay is designed for card-based transactions. Therefore, QR code payments and direct bank transfers will continue to rely on existing UPI applications.

The Road Ahead for Apple Pay in India

If the reported October rollout materializes, Apple Pay's journey in India will begin by catering primarily to credit card users who prefer contactless payments. The bigger challenge for Apple will be to expand beyond this initial base and demonstrate its relevance within an already mature and widely adopted real-time payment ecosystem. Its success will likely depend on its ability to integrate seamlessly into daily transactions and expand its supported financial institutions.
