ChatGPT Boosts Chrome with New AI Features, Rivals Google Gemini

· · 2 min read

OpenAI has significantly expanded ChatGPT's integration into the Chrome browser, introducing new AI capabilities to automate everyday tasks, interact with tabs, and gather information. This update directly challenges Google Gemini's existing AI-powered browsing tools.

OpenAI has rolled out significant enhancements for ChatGPT within the Google Chrome browser, introducing new AI features designed to streamline user workflows and automate various online tasks. This strategic move intensifies the competition with Google Gemini, which has already established its AI presence in Chrome.

New AI Capabilities for ChatGPT in Chrome

The latest update allows ChatGPT to leverage information from all open Chrome tabs. Users can now ask the AI assistant to gather and compare details across multiple webpages, eliminating the need for manual copying and pasting. For instance, if you're comparing furniture listings, ChatGPT can analyze dimensions, materials, delivery times, and return policies from several open tabs.

Furthermore, ChatGPT's expanded "Work mode" introduces direct interaction with browser tabs. This enables the AI to perform a range of tasks such as sending messages, filling out forms, downloading files, and even organizing or grouping cluttered tabs, making browser management more efficient.

OpenAI has confirmed that these upgraded ChatGPT features are accessible across all ChatGPT plans, ensuring broad availability for users seeking to automate their browsing experience.

ChatGPT vs. Google Gemini: A Browser AI Showdown

Google has been actively integrating its Gemini AI into Chrome, offering similar functionalities. Since March 2026, Gemini in Chrome has been available in regions like India, New Zealand, and Canada, providing features such as webpage summaries, multi-tab information comparisons, and seamless integration with Google services like Gmail, Maps, Calendar, and YouTube.

Google also offers an "Auto Browse" feature for its AI Pro and Ultra subscribers in India and the US, which can handle specific online tasks like filling shopping carts or making reservations. Both AI platforms aim to minimize the need for users to constantly switch between tabs, enhancing productivity by automating routine online activities.

How to Use ChatGPT's Enhanced Chrome Features

To access ChatGPT's new browser control capabilities, users must first install the official ChatGPT extension from the Google Chrome Web Store. Additionally, OpenAI states that the ChatGPT desktop application is required for full browser interaction features. Once installed, users will need to review and approve website access prompts to allow ChatGPT to work with their open tabs effectively.
