Hyderabad Police Warn: WhatsApp 'NO' Reply Scam Threatens Savings

· · 2 min read

Hyderabad Police have issued a warning about a new WhatsApp scam. Cybercriminals send fake transaction alerts, instructing users to reply 'NO' if unauthorized, which can then expose devices to malware and financial data theft.

Hyderabad Police Issue Urgent WhatsApp Scam Warning

The Hyderabad City Police Commissioner, VC Sajjanar, has issued a critical warning regarding a sophisticated new cyber scam targeting WhatsApp users. Unlike typical phishing attempts that demand OTPs or suspicious links, this fraud leverages fear to trick victims into responding to messages, potentially compromising their financial security.

How the "Reply 'NO'" Scam Works

According to Commissioner Sajjanar, scammers initiate contact via WhatsApp from unknown numbers, sending a message that falsely claims money has been debited from the recipient's bank account. A subsequent message then instructs the user to reply 'NO' if they did not authorize the transaction.

The danger lies in this seemingly innocuous reply. Responding 'NO' is described as triggering an "auto-execution file attack," which could install malware on the victim's device. This malware then grants criminals unauthorized access to the device and sensitive financial information, leading to potential loss of savings.

What to Do If You Receive a Suspicious Message

Police advise extreme caution: do NOT panic or respond with 'YES' or 'NO' to any unfamiliar message concerning banking transactions. Instead, users should directly verify any alleged debit by logging into their bank's official mobile application or net-banking website.

It is crucial to avoid opening unexpected attachments or downloading files from unknown senders. If any transaction appears suspicious, contact your bank solely through its verified customer care number, not through contact details provided in the suspicious message. Block the sender's number and preserve any relevant evidence for reporting.

Report Cyber Fraud Immediately

If you suspect you have fallen victim to cyber fraud and lost money, immediately call India's national cybercrime helpline at 1930. Additionally, report the incident online at cybercrime.gov.in. Prompt reporting can significantly aid authorities and banks in taking action against fraudulent transactions.

Stay Vigilant Against Financial Scams

This evolving threat underscores the importance of digital vigilance. Never allow an unexpected message, especially one designed to induce panic, to rush you into making financial decisions or interacting with unknown senders. Always independently verify financial activities through official channels.
