India is hosting the significant BRICS Summit in Delhi from September 12 to 13, 2026, an event expected to draw numerous world leaders, senior ministers, and large international delegations. The decision to declare holidays follows directions from the Central government, aiming to ensure the smooth conduct of this high-profile international gathering.
According to a circular issued by the Supreme Court’s Administrative General Branch on September 9, 2026, the move was approved by the Full Court. This administrative change is pursuant to an Office Memorandum released by the Department of Personnel and Training (DoP&T) on September 3, 2026.
Impact on Court Operations
The September 11 holiday applies to both the apex court and its Registry, while September 12 specifically affects the Registry. These closures are necessitated by heightened security arrangements, traffic restrictions, and logistical measures implemented across New Delhi to manage summit-related activities effectively.
To compensate for these additional non-working days, the Supreme Court has designated Saturday, November 28, 2026, as a full working day. Registry offices are scheduled to operate until 5:00 PM on that date. The notification, signed by Additional Registrar (AG) Srikanth G. Pai, has been circulated to all relevant officials for compliance.
