The Election Commission of India (EC) has announced a third extension for the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls across six states: Maharashtra, Delhi, Haryana, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Nagaland. This decision aims to provide eligible citizens with additional time to register their names or make necessary corrections to their voter details.
Supreme Court's Intervention Prompts Extension
The latest extension comes shortly after the Supreme Court took a firm stance on the rigidity of previous deadlines for the electoral roll revision exercise. A bench led by the Chief Justice of India questioned the strict October 30 cut-off and the requirement for previously registered voters to use Form 6, typically meant for first-time registrants. The Court urged the poll body to maintain an open enrolment window, simplify the registration process, and avoid enforcing stringent cut-off dates for inclusion.
The EC's revised schedule also incorporates requests from the Chief Electoral Officers of the respective states, acknowledging the need for more flexibility.
Revised Deadlines Across Affected States
Maharashtra
- Filing Claims & Objections: Extended from October 26 to November 13.
- Disposal of Claims & Objections: Until November 25.
- Final Electoral Roll Publication: November 30, 2026. (The draft roll was published on August 31.)

This ensures that all eligible voters are aware of the extended opportunities to get their names included in the electoral rolls or seek corrections. With these extensions, Maharashtra, Haryana, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Nagaland will see their final electoral rolls published on November 30, 2026, while Delhi's will follow on December 22, 2026.
