India Condemns Alleged US Hindu Temple Shooting Plot, Urges Protection

· · 2 min read

India expressed deep concern over an alleged mass shooting plot targeting a Hindu temple in Illinois, calling the anti-Hindu and racist nature of the threat "particularly disturbing." US authorities arrested Alexandros Paporakis, 19, in connection with the plan.

New Delhi has voiced strong condemnation regarding a reported plot to carry out a mass shooting at a Hindu temple in Illinois, United States. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) described the alleged anti-Hindu and racist motivations behind the threat as "particularly disturbing" and urged US authorities to ensure the safety of the Indian community.

Arrest Made in Illinois Plot

The condemnation follows the arrest of Alexandros Paporakis, a 19-year-old from Palatine, Illinois, on October 11. Paporakis is accused of planning a mass shooting, with a Hindu place of worship in the Aurora area, near Chicago, identified as a potential target. US law enforcement agencies acted swiftly after receiving alerts about disturbing electronic communications from the suspect.

During a search of Paporakis's residence, police recovered a rifle, multiple loaded magazines, hundreds of rounds of ammunition, and a tactical vest with body armor. Investigators also found materials associated with white supremacist extremism, including a document titled "Why I Fought: A.K.A.: (Aurora Shooter's Manifesto)," which contained extremist statements and references to violence against people of South Asian, particularly Indian, heritage.

India Calls for Vigilance and Action

The MEA acknowledged the prompt action by American authorities, including the arrest and charges filed against the suspect. However, the ministry highlighted that this incident contributes to growing concerns over racist hostility and anti-India sentiment in the US.

"This incident adds to growing concerns over racist hostility and anti-India hate in the US. There is a need for greater vigilance, zero tolerance for hate-motivated violence, and decisive action to ensure the safety and security of the Indian community," the ministry stated.

India has called upon US authorities to thoroughly investigate the case, bring those responsible to justice, and implement measures to prevent similar incidents from occurring. While authorities believe an attack may have been planned for October 11, the specific intended location for the shooting remains unconfirmed and under investigation.

Paporakis faces charges of making a terrorist threat and unlawful possession of a weapon. A judge has ordered him detained following a recent hearing.
