India Issues Caution for Citizens in France Amid Violent Protests, Local Curfews

· · 2 min read

The Indian embassy in Paris has advised nationals to exercise caution and avoid crowded areas due to ongoing violent protests and localised curfews across France. Demonstrations over living costs and public services have escalated into clashes and arson in several major cities.

The Indian embassy in Paris has issued a comprehensive advisory urging Indian nationals residing in or visiting France to remain vigilant and exercise due caution. This warning comes amidst escalating violent protests and the imposition of localised curfews across various French cities.

Vigilance Advised Amid Widespread Unrest

The advisory, released on Wednesday evening, specifically cautions against large gatherings and crowded places where demonstrations are occurring. Indian citizens are urged to follow instructions from French authorities and stay informed through official channels regarding potential disruptions to public transport and local developments.

The nationwide unrest, which began as localised student mobilisations in a Paris suburb on September 17, has swiftly escalated into widespread class strikes, blockades, and street demonstrations. These protests stem from grievances over rising living costs, declining public services, and specific education concerns, including inadequate funding, poor facilities, and staff shortages in schools.

Protests Lead to Clashes and Curfews

The demonstrations have unfortunately evolved into widespread violence, including looting, arson, and clashes with police in major urban centers such as Paris, Marseille, and Lyon. French authorities have responded by imposing localised curfews in affected areas and taking firm action against those involved in the unrest.

Justice Minister Gerald Darmanin reported that out of 2,500 people detained during and after the disturbances, 174 have been jailed, and 917 have faced formal prosecution. Despite two consecutive nights of relative calm, further protests are planned for Thursday and Saturday, with a nationwide strike called by labour unions for November 5 to address living costs and public service cuts.

Macron Addresses Foreign Interference

In related developments, French President Emmanuel Macron has criticised foreign leaders for what he described as 'unacceptable' and 'stupid' remarks regarding the unrest. Speaking from Qatar, Macron specifically addressed claims of disinformation, including the spread of AI-generated images depicting scenes that did not occur in France, and vowed to prevent further violence.
