Lady Shri Ram College for Women (LSR) has transitioned all teaching activities online, suspending physical classes after a 17-year-old girl was allegedly gangraped at Aastha Kunj Park, located near the Kalkaji Mandir and the college campus. The decision comes amidst heightened anxiety and safety concerns raised by students and staff.
Details of the Incident and Police Action
The incident, reported on Monday evening, involved three men who allegedly accosted the victim and a male friend in Aastha Kunj Park, posing as police officers. The perpetrators then separated the girl from her friend, taking her to an isolated area within the park where the alleged sexual assault occurred. Both victims were reportedly threatened. Delhi Police have since arrested all three accused.
The arrests included a dramatic confrontation with one accused, identified as Asif, near the District Magistrate's Office Road in Amar Colony. Asif reportedly opened fire during the apprehension attempt, with a bullet striking a head constable's bulletproof vest. Police returned fire in self-defence, injuring Asif in the leg. This encounter took place approximately 50 metres from LSR's back gate, further intensifying student fears.
Students Demand Enhanced Campus Safety
The developments have deeply unsettled LSR students, especially those residing in paying guest accommodations or other housing around the college and Aastha Kunj Park. Reports indicate some students are considering returning home temporarily, while others are avoiding solitary travel and commuting in groups. The LSR Students' Union convened an urgent online General Body Meeting on Tuesday evening to address these pressing concerns.
Ahead of the meeting, student representatives issued a statement highlighting that the recent events had left many feeling "shaken and unsafe." They called for a collective discussion on campus security and student welfare. The union plans to present these concerns to the college administration, specifically emphasizing the need for improved security around the campus perimeter. Students stressed that LSR campus safety must be an immediate priority, urging collective action to advocate for necessary changes.
