In a significant political upset, independent candidate Parimal Nathwani, backed by the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), has secured one of two Rajya Sabha seats from Jharkhand. This victory came despite the ruling INDIA bloc holding a comfortable majority in the state assembly, pointing to substantial cross-voting by legislators.
NDA-Backed Candidate Triumphs Amid Cross-Voting
The election results, announced on Thursday, saw Parimal Nathwani garner 28 votes, successfully defeating the Congress party's nominee, Pranav Jha, who polled 20 votes. The second Rajya Sabha seat was won by Baidyanath Ram of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), a key constituent of the INDIA bloc, with 30 votes.
The outcome surprised many political observers, as the BJP-led NDA coalition commands only 24 Members of Legislative Assembly (MLAs) in the 81-member Jharkhand Assembly. To secure a Rajya Sabha berth, a candidate typically requires 28 first-preference votes. Nathwani's ability to reach this threshold strongly suggests that MLAs from the opposing INDIA bloc cast their votes in his favor, defying party lines.
Implications for the INDIA Bloc
The INDIA bloc, which includes the JMM, Congress, and other allies, collectively holds 56 members in the House. On paper, these numbers should have enabled them to comfortably win both Rajya Sabha seats from the state. The unexpected loss of one seat to an NDA-backed independent represents a significant setback and highlights internal dissent or strategic shifts within the alliance.
During the counting process, three votes were declared invalid. Reports indicated that two of these invalid votes belonged to BJP legislators, while one was from a Congress MLA. Despite these invalidations, Nathwani's successful bid underscores the volatility and unpredictable nature of indirect elections, especially when party discipline wavers.
