Pakistan PM Sharif Praises Trump's Peace Role After 2026 Nobel Award

· · 2 min read

Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif lauded Donald Trump's "historic role" in advancing South Asia peace, reaffirming his country's Nobel Peace Prize nomination for the former US President. This statement follows the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize being awarded to South African jurist Navanethem "Navi" Pillay.

Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has publicly lauded former US President Donald Trump for his "historic role" in fostering peace in South Asia, particularly in de-escalating tensions between India and Pakistan. Sharif's comments, made on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), reaffirmed Pakistan's nomination of Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize.

This statement came on October 9, 2026, shortly after the Norwegian Nobel Committee announced that the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize would be awarded to Navanethem "Navi" Pillay, a veteran South African jurist of Indian origin, in Oslo.

Pakistan's Nomination and Trump's Claims

In his post, Prime Minister Sharif stated, "President Donald Trump played a historic role in advancing peace in South Asia. His timely intervention helped bring Pakistan and India back from the brink and secure a ceasefire, that is holding till today. In recognition of his outstanding contribution, Pakistan had nominated President Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize." He expressed hope that Trump's efforts to promote peace would "receive due recognition this time."

Islamabad's nomination of Trump cited his leadership and alleged use of trade leverage to facilitate de-escalation and secure a ceasefire between the two nuclear-armed nations. Trump himself has on multiple occasions claimed he deserved the Nobel Peace Prize for his role in brokering a ceasefire between India and Pakistan following a period of heightened hostilities.

In May of the same year, Trump had announced a ceasefire between the two countries after four days of fighting. He reportedly told reporters that he conveyed to both India and Pakistan that a ceasefire was necessary for them to maintain trade relations with the US. Sharif has consistently supported this narrative, stating that Trump's intervention averted a potential conflict.

India's Stance and Regional Context

However, New Delhi has consistently rejected any claims of third-party mediation or intervention in resolving the disputes with Pakistan. India maintains that any de-escalation or ceasefire was a result of direct talks between the Directors General of Military Operations (DGMOs) of both sides, without external involvement.

Tensions between India and Pakistan had escalated significantly following a terror attack in Pahalgam on April 22, which claimed 26 lives. In response, India conducted precision strikes on terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) on May 7. Hostilities concluded with an understanding to cease military actions after DGMO-level talks on May 10.
