Fatal Crash Near Kochi Airport
The accident occurred around 1:45 AM when Sajeev's Mini Cooper allegedly struck a scooter from behind, throwing its three occupants onto the road. All three victims—Iyas from Karnataka, Devika from Wayanad, and Gopika from Palakkad—were 21-year-old students and part-time workers. They later succumbed to their injuries.
Driver's Alleged Remarks and Police Investigation
According to accounts given to police by local rescuers, Sajeev allegedly made startling remarks at the scene, questioning, “This is airport road, what is wrong with speeding?” and adding, “What are roads meant for? Driving, right?”
Police took Sajeev into custody and have booked him under Section 105 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which pertains to culpable homicide not amounting to murder. Investigators stated that Sajeev was allegedly driving at approximately 125 kmph at the time of the crash. They are also examining his history of overspeeding, noting that he had previously been recorded driving at 218 kmph.
Social Media Evidence Examined
Authorities are reviewing several Instagram reels reportedly shared by Sajeev, which allegedly depict him driving at speeds exceeding 200 kmph. These videos, along with forensic and technical evidence, are crucial parts of the ongoing investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash.
Suspected Intoxication Confirmed
Police have also confirmed that Sajeev was under the influence of alcohol during the incident. The tragic event has sparked calls for stringent action against reckless driving, as investigators continue to piece together the full sequence of events.
