As the festive season of Navratri approaches, social media platforms in Ahmedabad are seeing a surge in unusual advertisements offering 'Rent-a-Garba Partner' services. These posts, which have quickly gone viral, promise companions for Garba nights, complete with various packages and price points.
Police Investigate Viral 'Rent-a-Garba Partner' Posts
The trend initially appeared to stem from a few genuine social media accounts seeking to boost their reach. However, similar advertisements have since proliferated across numerous profiles, with some reportedly featuring AI-generated content. This rapid spread has caught the attention of the Ahmedabad Cyber Crime Cell, which has launched an investigation into the nature of these posts.
According to the viral advertisements, individuals can hire a Garba partner for fees ranging from ₹500 for shorter durations to as much as ₹6,500 for extended or all-night packages. Services touted include basic Garba lessons, matching outfits, selfies, and even creating Instagram reels and photographs.
- Silver Package (approx. ₹1,000): Two hours, optional matching outfits, basic Garba lessons, a couple of selfies.
- Gold Package (approx. ₹1,500): Four hours, matching outfits, basic Garba lessons, reels and photographs.
- Platinum Package (approx. ₹2,000): All-night companionship, advanced Garba moves, couple photographs, Instagram content.
Ahmedabad Cyber Crime Cell ACP Hardik Mandakia confirmed that an inquiry is underway to determine if these advertisements represent genuine services, misleading promotions, or a potential vehicle for cyber fraud.
Official Warning: Beware of Payment Scams
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Cybercrime Branch) Lavina Sinha has issued a strong warning to the public. She advised extreme caution when engaging with such advertisements, particularly when dealing with unknown profiles or making payments.
"We are currently investigating the rent-a-partner posts on social media. We are checking if there is fraud or malafide intentions in such posts," Sinha stated to news agency IANS.
Police specifically cautioned against clicking unknown payment links, scanning QR codes, or opening suspicious attachments that may be sent when attempting to book these services. Such links could compromise messaging applications, bank accounts, or lead to financial fraud.
The authorities urge anyone who has already transferred money to unverified accounts or suspects they have fallen victim to a scam to immediately contact their nearest police station or the cybercrime branch. The investigation is ongoing, and the true intent behind these viral 'Rent-a-Garba Partner' advertisements remains unconfirmed.
