Muhurat Trading 2026: Market Overview
Indian equity markets experienced a slight dip during the auspicious Muhurat Trading 2026 session held on Sunday, November 8, coinciding with Diwali Lakshmi Pujan. Both the 30-share BSE Sensex and the NSE Nifty index ended marginally lower after the special 70-minute trading window.
The Sensex declined by 28.62 points, or 0.04 percent, to settle at 80,999.40. Similarly, the Nifty index shed 43.95 points, marking a 0.18 percent decrease, to close at 24,986.40.
Muhurat Trading is an annual tradition on Diwali, considered highly auspicious by investors and traders. It signifies the commencement of Vikram Samvat, the Hindu calendar year observed by the trading community, and is often viewed as a symbolic start to new investments.
Top Performers and Laggards
Among the Nifty's top gainers were Sun Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd, Tata Steel Ltd, Oil & Natural Gas Corporation Ltd (ONGC), Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Ltd (TMPV), and Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd, with shares rising up to 2.96 percent. Conversely, top laggards included SBI Life Insurance Company Ltd, InterGlobe Aviation Ltd (IndiGo's parent company), Bharti Airtel Ltd, Max Healthcare Institute Ltd, and Infosys Ltd, which saw declines of up to 1.11 percent.
Expert Outlook: Sectors to Watch
Sanjay Sinha, founder of Citrus Advisors, identified promising opportunities in specific sectors. He highlighted engineering and capital goods, attributing their potential to an anticipated increase in private sector capital expenditure (capex).
Sinha also drew attention to the telecom sector, suggesting it might attract significant market interest in the near future. "Tariff revision is now long overdue. Any tariff increase is directly going to flow to the bottom line. Over the next 12 months, this sector may attract attention and could be among the outperforming sectors," he stated.
Nifty Technical Analysis
From a technical perspective, Ajit Mishra, SVP (Research) at Religare Broking, commented on the Nifty's performance. He noted that a recent sharp weekly rally had significantly improved the near-term outlook, with the index reclaiming the 25,000-mark. Mishra emphasized that the sustainability of this upward movement would be crucial for determining if the recovery evolves into a more durable uptrend. He projected the 24,200–24,500 zone as a critical support base, with potential for the index to extend its gains towards 25,200–25,600 in upcoming sessions.
Upcoming Market Holidays
Following the special Muhurat Trading session, domestic equity markets will resume regular trading on Monday, November 9. However, stock exchanges will observe a holiday on Tuesday, November 10, for Diwali Balipratipada. Additionally, two more trading holidays are scheduled for the calendar year: November 24 for Prakash Gurpurb Sri Guru Nanak Dev and December 25 for Christmas.
