Air India Express has officially withdrawn its plans to operate from the new Noida International Airport (Jewar Airport), just days before its scheduled opening on June 15. The airline, part of the Tata Group, has also ceased operations at Hindon Airport, citing cost-cutting measures and a broader strategy to rationalize its network.
Impact on Jewar Airport Operations
The withdrawal means that when Jewar Airport commences commercial operations, only IndiGo and Akasa Air will be serving passengers initially. IndiGo is slated to begin flights on the opening day, June 15, with Akasa Air following suit on June 16. This significantly reduces the flight options for residents of Noida, Greater Noida, and western Uttar Pradesh who were anticipating a wider choice of carriers from the new facility.
Why Air India Express Pulled Out
According to reports, Air India Express has indefinitely postponed its launch plans for Noida International Airport. This decision stems from cost-cutting initiatives within the Tata Group-owned Air India, which has been grappling with mounting losses. The group is reportedly reluctant to incur additional expenses for setting up new facilities at Jewar, given its substantial existing presence at the Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) in Delhi.
The move is part of a larger exercise to streamline the airline's networks, with several other routes also under review for potential adjustments.
What This Means for Flyers
For passengers, Air India Express's exit from Jewar Airport translates to fewer choices for domestic and international travel. Those who had hoped to utilize affordable Air India Express flights, particularly to destinations like Abu Dhabi or Dubai, will now need to consider other airlines or travel from Delhi's IGIA.
While commercial operations at Jewar Airport will proceed as scheduled with IndiGo and Akasa Air, travelers are strongly advised to verify airline schedules before making travel plans. Early passengers should also compare fares between Jewar and Delhi, as pricing differences could be notable during the initial launch phase.
Continued Dependence on Delhi Airport
One of the key selling points of Jewar Airport was its potential to reduce the reliance of Noida, Greater Noida, Ghaziabad, Bulandshahr, and parts of Western Uttar Pradesh on the Delhi airport. However, with Air India Express backing out of both Jewar and Hindon, passengers loyal to the airline group will still need to commute to Delhi to access Air India and Air India Express flights, thus maintaining the region's dependence on IGIA for a segment of air travel.
