The Union Cabinet, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has given its approval for the construction of a significant 135.871-kilometer, four-lane access-controlled Guwahati-Tezpur corridor in Assam. This ambitious infrastructure project carries an estimated cost of ₹8,970.20 crore.
Expected to be a game-changer for regional connectivity, the corridor is projected to significantly reduce travel time between Guwahati and Tezpur by half. It will also enhance overall connectivity across Assam and neighboring Arunachal Pradesh, fostering economic and social development.
Project Details and Scope
The new corridor will be developed under the Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) Toll model, ensuring sustainable management and operation. It is strategically positioned along National Highway 15 (NH-15), a crucial artery for the region.
A notable feature of the project is the inclusion of a 4.9-kilometer Emergency Landing Facility (ELF) on the Tezpur bypass. This facility, planned in close coordination with the Indian Air Force (IAF), underscores the corridor's strategic importance beyond civilian travel.
Key Infrastructure Components
- Major Bypasses: Five major bypasses, spanning a total of 58.7 kilometers, are part of the plan. These will specifically alleviate congestion in urbanized areas such as Baihata Chariali, Sipajhar, Kharupetia, Dekiajuli, and Tezpur.
- Bridges: The project incorporates 15 major bridges and 30 minor bridges, crucial for navigating the diverse terrain of Assam.
- Flyovers and Underpasses: A total of 19 flyovers, 46 underpasses, and a dedicated elephant underpass on the Tezpur bypass are designed to ensure smooth traffic flow and wildlife safety.
- Service Roads: Approximately 210 kilometers of service roads will support local traffic movement alongside the main access-controlled highway.
Economic and Social Impact
Government officials anticipate that the Guwahati-Tezpur corridor will provide seamless connectivity to vital economic, social, and logistics hubs throughout Assam and Arunachal Pradesh. This includes improved access to eight PM Gati Shakti economic nodes, comprising industrial parks, and two aspirational districts: Darrang and Udalguri.
Furthermore, the corridor is set to boost tourism by improving access to three major destinations: the Maa Kamakhya Temple, Kaziranga National Park, and Orang National Park. Enhanced connectivity to seven logistics hubs, including three major railway stations, two airports, and two waterway terminals, will also streamline trade and transport.
Beyond travel time reductions, the project is expected to double average travel speeds, improve road safety, enhance fuel efficiency, and reduce vehicle operating costs, contributing significantly to regional mobility and socio-economic progress.
