Australia Introduces New Biometric Visa Requirements for India and 60 Other Nations

· · 2 min read

Australia is expanding biometric visa requirements, including fingerprints and facial images, for applicants from India and nearly 60 other nations. The new rules take effect October 26, 2026, for all new visa applications.

Starting October 26, 2026, individuals applying for an Australian visa from India and approximately 60 other countries will face new biometric collection requirements. This significant change mandates the provision of fingerprints and a facial image as part of the visa application process, aimed at enhancing the security and efficiency of Australia's visa system.

Who Is Affected by the New Biometric Rules?

The expanded Australia visa biometrics policy applies to all new visa applications lodged from October 26, 2026. Crucially, applicants whose visa submissions have already been made prior to this date will not be subject to these new requirements. The Australian High Commission has confirmed that this measure is part of a broader effort to maintain a secure and trusted immigration framework.

How Will Biometrics Be Collected?

  • Not every visa applicant will automatically be required to provide biometrics. The Department of Home Affairs will notify individuals if biometrics are necessary for their application and provide detailed instructions.
  • Applicants may be asked to visit an Australian Biometrics Collection Centre (ABCC) in person.
  • Alternatively, some eligible applicants might be able to submit their biometrics digitally through the Australian Immi App, particularly those who have previously provided biometrics at an ABCC and hold a valid passport.

Privacy and Processing Times

The Australian government has assured that all biometric information collected will be stored and managed in strict accordance with Australian legislation and applicable local laws. Robust privacy and data protection safeguards will be in place to govern the handling of this sensitive information.

Authorities do not anticipate that the introduction of these new biometric requirements will lead to delays in visa processing times, provided that applicants complete any requested biometric steps promptly. The goal is to integrate these measures seamlessly into the existing visa application workflow without hindering efficiency.
