BASF India Eyes Major MDI Production Complex in Gujarat; Shares Climb

· · 2 min read

BASF India is evaluating a significant investment to establish a methylene diphenyl diisocyanate (MDI) production complex in Dahej, Gujarat. The company has secured land and is in advanced feasibility study stages for the facility, leading to a rise in its stock.

BASF India Ltd. announced it is actively assessing a substantial investment aimed at establishing a new methylene diphenyl diisocyanate (MDI) production complex within India. This strategic move, confirmed by the company on Monday, follows the securing of an industrial land parcel in Dahej, Gujarat, through its subsidiary, BASF India Polyurethanes Pvt Ltd.

The company is currently in the advanced stages of a detailed feasibility study for the proposed facility. MDI is a crucial chemical compound, serving as a primary building block for various polyurethane products. These versatile materials are extensively utilized across industries for applications such as building insulation, refrigeration systems, automotive components, furniture manufacturing, and a wide array of consumer goods.

Strategic Expansion in a Key Market

Stephan Kothrade, a member of the Board of Executive Directors and Chief Technology Officer of BASF SE, emphasized India's strategic importance. "India is among the most attractive growth markets globally, with strong demand expected across a wide range of industries," Kothrade stated.

He further elaborated that a potential investment in India would significantly expand BASF’s existing manufacturing footprint in the country. This initiative aligns with BASF's "local-for-local" strategy, enabling the company to efficiently serve customers in India and neighboring markets with locally produced MDI, thereby enhancing supply chain resilience and responsiveness.

Global Production Network and Outlook

Ramkumar Dhruva, President of BASF’s Monomers division, highlighted the company's continuous global investment strategy in its MDI production network. "BASF continues to invest in its global MDI production network to support customer growth and ensure reliable supply across key markets," Dhruva commented.

BASF already operates an integrated chemical complex in Dahej, Gujarat, which includes an MDI splitter and polyurethane production facilities. Globally, BASF maintains MDI production sites in several key locations, including:

  • Antwerp, Belgium
  • Chongqing and Caojing (Shanghai), China
  • Yeosu, South Korea
  • Geismar, United States (with a $1 billion expansion project nearing completion)

The final investment decision for the Indian MDI complex remains contingent on the successful outcome of the ongoing feasibility study and securing all necessary regulatory approvals.

Market Reaction

Following the announcement, shares of BASF India experienced a positive movement, climbing 1.06 percent to trade at Rs 3,645.70. This indicates investor confidence in the company's strategic growth plans within the Indian market.
