Chandrasekaran, Noel Tata's Secret Meeting on Tata Sons Leadership Rift Ends Without Resolution

· · 2 min read

Tata Sons Chairman N Chandrasekaran and Tata Trusts Chairman Noel Tata held a secret meeting on October 25 to address the conglomerate's leadership rift. Discussions on Chandrasekaran’s reappointment and the company’s listing reportedly ended without resolution.

Secret Meeting Fails to Bridge Divide

A clandestine meeting took place on Sunday, October 25, between Tata Sons Chairman N Chandrasekaran and Tata Trusts Chairman Noel Tata at Tata's south Mumbai residence. The high-stakes discussion, aimed at resolving the ongoing leadership rift within the Tata conglomerate, concluded without a consensus, according to reports citing sources.

Arranged by former Tata group veteran NA Soonawala, the meeting marked the first direct interaction between the two sides since a contentious board meeting on September 17. That meeting had approved Chandrasekaran's second five-year term, set to begin in February 2027, and supported the listing of Tata Sons – both decisions Noel Tata opposed.

Key Issues on the Table

The agenda for the secret talks focused on several critical issues:

  • Tata Sons' Listing: The potential public listing of Tata Sons, a move supported by Chandrasekaran due to regulatory requirements from the Reserve Bank of India, but strongly opposed by Tata Trusts, which holds approximately 66% of Tata Sons.
  • Shapoorji Pallonji Group's Stake: A proposed buyout of the Shapoorji Pallonji Group’s 18.4% stake. Noel Tata suggested an offer of Rs 25,000 crore through partial monetization, while Chandrasekaran acknowledged the proposal but noted a listing could complicate matters.
  • Chandrasekaran's Tenure: Noel Tata argued that Chandrasekaran should adhere to the group policy of retiring at 65. Chandrasekaran, while agreeing to abide by the policy, expressed the need to complete major ongoing projects at Tata Electronics, Air India, and Tata Digital.

Aftermath: Noel Tata Challenges Decisions

Despite an agreement to continue dialogue, Noel Tata escalated the dispute the very next day. He reportedly wrote to Tata Sons company secretary Suprakash Mukhopadhyay, formally challenging the decisions made at the September 17 board meeting, including Chandrasekaran’s reappointment. Tata questioned the procedures, voting requirements, and potential conflicts of interest, requesting comprehensive documentation of the meeting.

Ongoing Tensions and Future Outlook

The unresolved meeting underscores deep divisions within the conglomerate's leadership. Former group executives and insiders reportedly encouraged the Sunday talks, highlighting the internal pressure to find a resolution. However, with Noel Tata indicating a willingness to pursue legal action if the reappointment issue remains unsettled, the Tata Sons leadership rift appears far from over.

Neither Chandrasekaran nor Noel Tata has publicly commented on the reported secret meeting.
