For many professionals, career growth often involves moving between different employers. While this can lead to better opportunities and higher salaries, it can also inadvertently result in employees accumulating multiple Employees' Provident Fund (EPF) accounts. If these old accounts are not managed or transferred, tracking your retirement savings can become unnecessarily complicated.
Understanding Your Universal Account Number (UAN)
The Universal Account Number (UAN) is a crucial 12-digit identifier assigned to every EPF member. Its primary purpose is to link all your different PF Member IDs under a single, unified account. Ideally, you should maintain and use the same UAN throughout your entire career, providing it to each new employer you join.
Why Multiple EPF Accounts Arise
Despite the UAN system, multiple EPF accounts or even more than one UAN can sometimes be generated. This typically happens when an employee switches jobs, and a new employer, either due to oversight or administrative error, creates a new UAN instead of linking to the existing one. Additionally, different Member IDs might be created under the same UAN for each employer. In such scenarios, it becomes essential to identify these older accounts and transfer their balances to your current, active EPF account to ensure continuity of your service record and easier management of your retirement funds.
How to Check Your EPF Service History
You can easily review your EPF employment history through the official EPFO member portal. Follow these steps:
- Log in to the EPFO member portal using your UAN and password.
- Navigate to the 'View' section and select 'Service History'.
- This section will display all the different PF Member IDs associated with your previous and current employers.
Reviewing this list will help you pinpoint any old accounts that may still hold untransferred PF balances.
Steps to Transfer Old EPF Balances Online
Once you have identified an old EPF account, initiating an online transfer to your current account is a straightforward process:
- Log in to the EPFO member portal.
- Under 'Online Services', select 'One Member – One EPF Account (Transfer Request)'.
- Verify your personal details and current employment information displayed on the portal.
- Enter the previous Member ID or old UAN to retrieve the details of your earlier PF accounts.
- Select the specific old account(s) you wish to transfer.
- Request an One-Time Password (OTP) which will be sent to your registered mobile number.
- Enter the OTP, check the declaration box, and submit your request.
The transfer request will then be sent for online attestation and approval by either your previous or current employer, depending on the applicable process. The EPFO will subsequently process the request, transferring your old PF balance to your current account. You can track the status of your request via the 'Track Claim Status' section on the EPFO portal. Typically, processing can take approximately 10 to 15 working days, subject to verification and approval.
Consolidating your EPF accounts is crucial for maintaining a clear record of your retirement savings and ensuring you don't lose track of any accumulated funds across various employers.
