Electricity employees across Haryana have ended their strike following a crucial meeting with the state government, where Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini provided a firm assurance against the privatisation of power distribution operations. The agreement, reached on October 23, 2026, also includes a commitment from the government to seek a review of a recent order by the Haryana Electricity Regulatory Commission (HERC) that had initially triggered the widespread protests.
Government Reaffirms Anti-Privatisation Stance
Chief Minister Saini reiterated the government's consistent opposition to privatisation, stating that its position had been clearly communicated in the Haryana Assembly. “Privatisation of any kind will not happen,” Saini affirmed, addressing the core concern of the striking employees and supporting their demands.
The resolution came after extensive discussions between government representatives and leaders of various electricity employees' unions. Following the positive outcome, union representatives agreed to withdraw their strike immediately, paving the way for the restoration of normal electricity services across the state.
HERC Order Under Review
A key aspect of the agreement involves the government's decision to issue directions to HERC under Section 108 of the relevant legislation. These directions will ask the independent regulatory body to review and potentially cancel its contentious order. Saini clarified that while HERC operates autonomously under its own legal framework, the government is pursuing a review through the established legal mechanisms available.
The Chief Minister noted that the original HERC order stemmed from an application filed by an individual. He also mentioned Section 94, which grants electricity distribution companies (discoms) the authority to approach HERC on such matters. The government's move signifies its commitment to addressing the employees' concerns through proper legal channels.
Unions Agree to Resume Work
Saini described the meeting as cordial, emphasizing that the government had assured union representatives of its full support. He expressed gratitude to the union leaders and employees for their cooperation in resolving the deadlock, which had led to significant power disruptions.
With the strike now called off, electricity employees are set to return to work, ensuring the swift restoration of essential power services for residents and businesses throughout Haryana. The government's firm stance against privatisation remains unchanged, according to the Chief Minister.
