Commuters and households in major Indian cities are facing higher fuel costs as CNG prices have seen a significant hike in Delhi and Mumbai. Meanwhile, rates for domestic LPG cylinders and Piped Natural Gas (PNG) largely held steady across various cities on September 8, 2026.
CNG Prices Surge in Key Metros
Mahanagar Gas Ltd (MGL) in Mumbai raised CNG prices by ₹2 per kilogram, bringing the rate to ₹88 per kg, effective September 1. MGL also increased domestic PNG prices by ₹1 per SCM. This follows a recent hike by Indraprastha Gas Ltd (IGL) in Delhi, where CNG prices climbed by ₹3.89 per kg to ₹86.98 per kg. IGL attributed the increase to a sharp rise in international LNG prices, exacerbated by the renewed West Asia crisis and disruptions to gas shipments through the Strait of Hormuz.

States and Union Territories have been urged to provide administrative support to accelerate the transition from LPG to piped gas.
These initiatives come at a critical time, as geopolitical tensions, particularly in West Asia, continue to impact global energy markets. Recent threats from Iran regarding retaliation against US assets, warning of vulnerability to energy infrastructure across the Gulf, have further underscored the risks.
