Emkay Global Initiates 'Buy' on NSE, Projects Multi-Year Growth in Capital Markets

· · 3 min read

Emkay Global has initiated coverage on the National Stock Exchange (NSE) with a 'Buy' rating and a target price of Rs 2,050. The brokerage highlights India's deepening financialisation and NSE's market leadership as key drivers for significant long-term growth.

Leading brokerage Emkay Global has issued a 'Buy' rating for the National Stock Exchange (NSE), setting a target price of Rs 2,050 for September 2027. The firm anticipates that India's expanding capital markets, fueled by increasing financialisation and wealth creation, will provide a multi-year growth opportunity for the exchange.

NSE's Dominance and Growth Drivers

Emkay Global's optimistic outlook stems from several factors, including India's robust capital market development, NSE's resilient leadership across various business segments, and the inherent profitability of market infrastructure institutions. The brokerage forecasts NSE to achieve a 13 percent Earnings Per Share (EPS) Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) between FY27 and FY29, building on a strong 19 percent CAGR from FY22 to FY26.

Regulatory adjustments are expected to further consolidate market activity, contributing to future earnings stability. NSE currently commands approximately 93 percent market share in the cash segment and maintains a near-monopoly in equity futures and stock options, securing its leadership through a self-reinforcing liquidity flywheel.

Shifting Investment Landscape

India's macroeconomic landscape is undergoing a significant transformation, with households increasingly reallocating savings from physical assets like real estate and gold towards organized, market-linked financial instruments. This shift, combined with the rise of Digital Public Infrastructure, streamlined digital onboarding processes, enhanced regulatory oversight, and improved financial literacy, is broadening market participation beyond major metropolitan centers to Tier II and Tier III cities.

According to Emkay Global, household allocations to equities and mutual funds have risen from about 16 percent of financial assets in FY19 to approximately 23 percent in FY25. This trend is deepening market liquidity and strengthening the overall financial ecosystem, providing a structural runway for NSE's long-term growth.

Resilience Amid Volatility

While market volatility, regulatory evolution, and technological disruption are inherent to the exchange business, Emkay Global notes that NSE has consistently demonstrated its ability to sustain profitable growth through varying conditions over decades. The exchange's robust network effect and diversified revenue streams offer sufficient flexibility to adapt to shifts in the regulatory and macroeconomic environment.

Despite concerns regarding derivatives turnover, the growth in Indian and NSE derivatives volumes in recent years has mirrored that seen in the US. The brokerage suggests that even in scenarios of moderating transaction volumes, growth in non-transaction revenue and potential adjustments to transaction charges can continue to support profitable expansion for the exchange.

Emkay Global's analysis concludes that given NSE's strong brand, market leadership, profitability, and cash generation capabilities, its shares present a compelling case for inclusion in India-focused equity portfolios.
