Equitas SFB Shares Jump 9% After Balaji Nuthalapadi Named Interim CEO

· · 2 min read

Equitas Small Finance Bank shares surged 9% today following the appointment of Balaji Nuthalapadi as interim CEO, pending RBI approval. This leadership change comes after former CEO PN Vasudevan's resignation on October 29, 2026.

Shares of Equitas Small Finance Bank Ltd. experienced a significant rally, climbing 9% in early trading on Wednesday. The surge followed the bank's announcement of Balaji Nuthalapadi as its interim Chief Executive Officer (CEO), a move that awaits approval from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI).

Nuthalapadi, who currently serves as a Whole-Time Director (Executive Director) for the bank, was approved by Equitas SFB's board of directors based on the recommendation of the Nomination and Remuneration Committee. The Chennai-based financial institution made the announcement in an exchange filing on November 3, 2026.

Stock Performance and Market Reaction

The bank's stock reached Rs 57.27, up from its previous close of Rs 52.65. This positive movement pushed the firm's market capitalization to Rs 6,494 crore. The appointment of an interim leader appears to have reassured investors after a period of uncertainty.

Context of Former CEO's Resignation

The interim appointment follows the resignation of former CEO PN Vasudevan on October 29, 2026. His departure triggered a sharp sell-off in Equitas SFB shares, which hit a 20% lower circuit on the day of the announcement and remained under pressure in subsequent sessions.

Vasudevan's resignation letter highlighted concerns over a potential conflict of interest involving an NBFC co-promoted by his daughter, which had received an RBI license. While Vasudevan maintained there was no actual conflict, he indicated an inability to address the board's concerns regarding the perception of a possible conflict, ultimately leading to his decision to step down.

The bank's board has initiated the process to identify a permanent successor to Vasudevan and plans to submit its recommendation to the central bank in accordance with applicable regulations.
