HDFC Securities has issued a statement clarifying that it has not been named among the accused in the First Information Report (FIR) related to the alleged Stockal trading fraud. This comes amid reports of potential losses nearing ₹100 crore for Indian investors.
The brokerage further emphasized that its operational partnership with Stockal, now rebranded as Borderless, concluded in 2024. This statement aims to distance HDFC Securities from the unauthorized transactions currently under investigation.
What is the Stockal Trading Fraud Controversy?
The controversy centers on allegations made by several Indian investors using the Stockal platform, who reportedly discovered unauthorized transactions in their US stock portfolios on October 15. It is alleged that holdings in major US companies, including tech giants like Apple, Amazon, Microsoft, and Nvidia, were liquidated without investor consent.
The proceeds from these sales were then reportedly invested in thinly traded microcap securities, leading to substantial potential losses for the affected investors, estimated at approximately ₹100 crore.
Stockal's Response to the Allegations
Borderless (formerly Stockal), a Bengaluru-based fintech registered with SEBI, acknowledged that 26 customer accounts appeared to have been accessed using valid login credentials. Of these, 13 accounts reportedly experienced unauthorized transactions involving the sale of large-cap US equities and subsequent purchase of illiquid securities.
However, Borderless maintained that no funds were withdrawn from the affected accounts and stated its investigation found no evidence of a breach in its platform, infrastructure, or internal systems. The company suggested that affected customers might have been targeted through social engineering linked to an earlier third-party data breach, though this remains unconfirmed.
Borderless has engaged independent cybersecurity specialists and is coordinating with its US brokerage partner, DriveWealth, to investigate the transactions and explore potential resolutions. This incident has reignited concerns regarding cybersecurity safeguards, investor protection, and accountability within overseas investment platforms.
HDFC Securities Upholds Compliance
