The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has taken stringent action against AWL Agri Business Ltd, the company behind the popular Fortune edible oil brand. The penalty comes after a laboratory test revealed that a sample of its fortified sunflower oil did not comply with mandated Vitamin D standards.
Failing Fortification Standards
The FSSAI's enforcement relates specifically to Fortune "Fryola" Refined Sunflower Seed Oil, which is produced at AWL Agri Business's Mangalore unit. Food safety officials collected a one-litre sample of the product from the Taj Fort Aguada Resort & Spa in Goa during routine testing.
Initial laboratory analysis confirmed that the fortified edible oil failed to meet the Food Safety and Standards (Fortification of Foods) Regulations, 2018. The report indicated that levels of both Vitamin A and Vitamin D were below the prescribed limits, classifying the product as "substandard" under Section 3(1)(zx) of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.
Referral Lab Upholds Findings
AWL Agri Business challenged the initial findings, requesting a re-examination of the sample. However, a referral laboratory subsequently upheld the original report, confirming a significant deficiency in the Vitamin D content.
Following this confirmation, the Central Licensing Authority granted sanction for prosecution, leading to an adjudication application. The Adjudicating Officer in Goa then issued an order imposing a penalty on AWL Agri Business for the manufacturing and marketing of the substandard fortified edible oil.
Broader Regulatory Crackdown
This action against AWL Agri Business is part of an escalating enforcement drive by the FSSAI across India. The regulator has intensified its scrutiny of various food business operators, including packaged food manufacturers, e-commerce platforms, and beverage companies, focusing on quality, labelling, and compliance issues.
