Global Markets Plunge: AI Stock Rout Triggers Circuit Breakers, India Faces Spillover

· · 2 min read

Major Asian markets, including Korea's Kospi and Japan's Nikkei, saw significant drops after a Nasdaq 100 selloff. Fears of new AI data center moratoriums following US midterm elections fueled the decline, with India bracing for potential indirect impacts.

Global stock markets experienced a sharp downturn today, with an AI stock rout leading to significant losses across major indices. Korea's Kospi index plummeted by as much as 8.8%, triggering circuit breakers, while Japan's Nikkei declined 5.7%. These drops followed an overnight rout on Wall Street, where the Nasdaq 100 fell 6.4%, wiping out an estimated $2.3 trillion in value – its worst trading session since March 2020.

The AI Moratorium Debate Fuels Selloff

The primary catalyst for this widespread market selloff appears to be growing fears of a moratorium on new artificial intelligence (AI) and technology data centers. These concerns intensified after Democratic gains over Republicans in the recent US midterm elections, prompting investors to question the future regulatory environment for AI infrastructure.

Nomura analysts indicated that while a federal AI data center (AIDC) moratorium is unlikely due to political divisions and a presidential veto, a "temporary pause" at the state level remains a distinct possibility. They highlighted that candidates campaigning on such pauses won in states like Texas and Georgia, suggesting a localized regulatory tightening could occur.

Broader Economic Headwinds

Beyond AI-specific regulatory fears, analysts point to several other factors contributing to the global equity weakness. High interest rates, elevated oil prices, and mixed Q3 results from US AI companies have collectively weighed on investor sentiment. There's a growing skepticism about whether massive AI investment commitments will generate adequate returns, even if moratorium concerns prove exaggerated.

A sustained "risk-on" environment, according to experts, would necessitate a pause in Federal Reserve rate hikes, a ceasefire to reduce oil prices, and a recovery in technology stocks – conditions not currently in sight.

India's Market Outlook Amidst Global Turmoil

For India, the immediate pressure from this global deleveraging is likely to be concentrated in IT and other globally sensitive stocks. Hariselvan Radhakrishnan, Founder & CEO of HST Wealth, noted that while India might initially demonstrate relative resilience, it is not immune to broader risk aversion.

Radhakrishnan explained that sustained global foreign selling could eventually affect India's domestic sectors, even without a direct earnings impact. Factors like stable crude oil prices, contained foreign institutional investor (FII) selling, and the Bank Nifty sustaining its recent breakout could help mitigate downside pressure on domestic equities. However, a significant wave of foreign institutional liquidation or a decisive breach of key market levels would signal that global risk aversion is increasingly outweighing India's domestic market supports.
