Gold & Silver Prices Steady Amid Fed Watch: Key Levels for Investors

· · 3 min read

Gold and silver prices remained rangebound as investors await the US Federal Reserve's policy decision for interest rate direction. Analysts highlight crucial support and resistance levels for precious metals on MCX and international markets.

Precious metals markets saw gold and silver prices hold steady this Monday, with investors closely monitoring the upcoming US Federal Reserve policy decision for clearer signals on interest rates. The market's anticipation of the Fed's stance is a primary driver influencing the immediate direction of these commodities.

Current Market Snapshot and Key Drivers

As of Monday, international gold futures were trading around $4,030 per ounce, experiencing a slight dip of 0.21%. Silver, meanwhile, saw a larger slip of 1.10% to $53.74 per ounce. On India's Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX), December gold futures were valued at ₹1,42,866 per 10 grams, while December silver futures stood at ₹1,94,415 per kilogram.

According to Amit Gupta, Senior Research Head at Kedia Advisory, gold futures on MCX have been trading within a ₹1,40,000 to ₹1,44,000 range per 10 grams. Silver prices, however, have faced additional pressure from a strengthening US dollar and ongoing uncertainties surrounding the global economic outlook.

Federal Reserve Decision and Dollar Strength

The Federal Reserve's interest rate decision is widely considered the most significant catalyst for precious metals this week. While markets largely expect the US central bank to maintain current rates, persistent inflation concerns have introduced the possibility of a rate hike in December. Any hawkish signals from the Fed could bolster the dollar, typically putting downward pressure on gold and silver.

The dollar index, hovering near 102 and close to a one-week high, continues to exert influence on precious metals. Beyond economic factors, geopolitical developments, such as recent security concerns in the Middle East involving Saudi-led forces and Houthi actions, also contribute to market sentiment, often increasing demand for safe-haven assets like gold.

Crucial Support and Resistance Levels

Investors are advised to watch specific price levels for potential market movements:

  • International Gold: Gupta suggests that if prices sustain above the critical support level of $3,980 per ounce, international gold could test $4,040–$4,070.
  • MCX Gold: On MCX, gold may move towards ₹1,44,000–₹1,46,000 per 10 grams, with ₹1,38,000 acting as a key support level.
  • International Silver: Sustaining above $52 per ounce could pave the way for silver to reach $57–$60.
  • MCX Silver: For MCX, silver could rise towards ₹2,00,000–₹2,06,000 per kilogram, with strong support found at ₹1,88,000.

These levels represent analyst estimates and should not be considered guaranteed price targets. Investors are encouraged to closely track the Fed's policy signals and the dollar's performance for further clues on the trajectory of gold and silver prices.
