Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) is set to undergo a six-hour shutdown of all flight operations on November 19, 2026, for its crucial annual post-monsoon maintenance program. This temporary closure will impact both intersecting runways, RWY 09/27 and RWY 14/32, from 11 am to 5 pm on the specified Thursday.
Essential Runway Maintenance for Safety
The Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL), which operates CSMIA, confirmed that the maintenance window is vital for ensuring the continued safety and operational efficiency of the airport's infrastructure. During this period, teams will conduct detailed runway inspections, carry out necessary surface repairs, and perform technical assessments of critical systems. This includes thorough checks of runway lighting, markings, and the vital drainage systems that are essential, especially after the monsoon season.
Advance Notice to Minimize Disruptions
To mitigate inconvenience for passengers and airlines, MIAL issued a Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) well in advance. Airlines and other key stakeholders were informed approximately six months prior to the scheduled shutdown. This extensive lead time allowed carriers to revise their flight schedules, make alternative arrangements, and adjust manpower plans, thereby minimizing potential travel disruptions.
CSMIA is a major aviation hub, spread across approximately 1,900 acres, handling nearly 1,000 air traffic movements on a typical day. In the financial year 2025-26, the airport managed 55.29 million passengers and over 0.85 million metric tonnes of cargo. Travelers planning to fly via Mumbai on November 19 are strongly advised to check with their respective airlines for updated flight statuses and any potential changes to their itineraries.
