Centre Launches Khelo India Sports Goods Manufacturing Scheme
The Indian Central government has introduced the Khelo India Sports Goods Manufacturing Scheme, allocating a substantial outlay of ₹1,856 crore. This strategic initiative is designed to bolster domestic sports goods production, support manufacturers, and enhance India's competitive standing in the global sports equipment market.
The scheme is slated to run for eight years, commencing from the financial year 2026-27 and concluding in 2033-34. Its core focus encompasses both manufacturing incentives and the comprehensive development of the broader industrial ecosystem for sports goods.
Two Key Pillars of the Scheme
The Khelo India Sports Goods Manufacturing Scheme is structured around two principal components:
- Manufacturing Incentives: This pillar aims to stimulate investment in the sector through various support mechanisms. These include fostering dedicated manufacturing zones, attracting anchor investments, providing turnover-linked assistance, and strengthening existing manufacturing clusters. Such measures are intended to encourage production expansion, draw in new capital, and reinforce established manufacturing hubs.
- Ecosystem Strengthening Interventions: The second component focuses on upgrading the essential infrastructure and capabilities required for a robust sports goods industry. Key areas of intervention include establishing advanced certification and testing facilities, promoting research and development, enhancing skill development programs, supporting startups, and boosting branding and outreach efforts for Indian-made sports equipment.
Driving Innovation and Quality in Sports Goods
Access to certification and testing infrastructure will be crucial for manufacturers to assess product quality and meet international standards. Research support is expected to drive innovation in materials, product design, and manufacturing processes, while skill development initiatives will ensure a pipeline of trained workers for the sector.
Furthermore, the scheme seeks to nurture new businesses and improve the market presence and awareness of domestically manufactured equipment. By combining financial assistance with infrastructure development, research, and skill-building, the government aims to create a more competitive and innovative environment for sports goods manufacturers across India.
The ₹1,856 crore allocation represents a structured, long-term commitment to support India's sports goods manufacturing sector, addressing critical needs in investment, infrastructure, research, and workforce development.
The success of this initiative will largely hinge on its effective implementation, the active participation of manufacturers, and the accessibility of support for eligible businesses nationwide.
