India Salary Hikes to Stabilize at 8-12% by 2026; Key Skills Fetch 30% Premium

· · 3 min read

India's average salary growth is projected to stabilize between 8-12% by 2026, but professionals with in-demand skills in AI, semiconductors, and renewables can command up to 30% raises when changing jobs, a new report reveals.

India's robust salary growth is set to moderate, with average annual increments expected to settle into an 8-12% range by 2026. However, a new report from Michael Page India highlights a growing disparity, where specialized technical and leadership skills are commanding significantly higher pay increases.

Specialized Skills Drive Higher Pay

The Michael Page India Salary Guide 2026 indicates that while the overall labor market is balancing after years of rapid growth, certain skill sets remain in high demand. Professionals with expertise in emerging technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML), semiconductor technologies, renewable energy, and advanced automotive and battery technologies can secure salary hikes of up to 30% when switching employers.

This premium reflects a fierce competition for niche talent across technology-led industries. Companies are increasingly looking for specific capabilities that align with innovation and strategic growth areas.

India as a Global Engineering & Manufacturing Hub

The trend is particularly pronounced within the engineering and manufacturing sectors. India is solidifying its position as a critical global hub for engineering and manufacturing, attracting multinational corporations to expand their research and development centers in states like Karnataka, Telangana, Maharashtra, Gujarat, and the National Capital Region.

This expansion fuels a sharp demand for specialized skills in areas like electric vehicles, advanced semiconductors, and renewable energy. To address talent shortages, companies are proactively recruiting internationally and upskilling existing professionals from related industries.

Leadership Capabilities and GCCs Remain Key

Beyond technical expertise, the report emphasizes the increasing importance of commercial acumen for senior leadership roles in engineering and manufacturing. Employers are seeking leaders capable of managing complex greenfield and brownfield projects, engaging with external stakeholders, and driving new product development initiatives.

Global Capability Centres (GCCs) continue to be a significant engine for employment growth. These centers are evolving beyond traditional shared services, becoming pivotal for innovation, advanced analytics, and product development, thereby reinforcing India's status as a global talent powerhouse.

TeamLease Data Reinforces Trends

Supporting the Michael Page findings, recent data from TeamLease reveals an even sharper distinction in salary growth. Employees earning ₹20 lakh and above are experiencing nearly 18% year-on-year salary hikes, significantly higher than the 6-6.8% seen in roles below ₹20 lakh.

For top-tier professionals earning over ₹50 lakh with highly specialized skills, increments can reach 40-45%. The strongest demand in this bracket is concentrated in critical areas such as cloud management, cybersecurity, AI/ML, and data analytics roles.

Overall hiring also saw a 14% year-on-year increase in August, signaling a market improvement. While sectors like IT services, GCCs, and Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) firms are seeing a pickup, traditional mid-level coding and testing roles face pressure due to the increasing adoption of AI tools.
