Indian Defense Stocks Surge Up to 5% on Rs 2.12 Lakh Crore Procurement Approval

· · 3 min read

Shares of major Indian defense companies like MTAR Technologies, HAL, BEML, and BEL rose significantly on October 27, 2026, following the Defence Acquisition Council's approval of capital procurement proposals worth Rs 2.12 lakh crore.

Indian defense sector stocks experienced a robust surge on October 27, 2026, with several key players seeing their share prices climb by up to 5%. This market optimism was fueled by the Defence Acquisition Council (DAC)'s recent approval of capital procurement proposals totaling an estimated Rs 2.12 lakh crore, signaling strong future order prospects for domestic manufacturers.

Among the top performers, MTAR Technologies Ltd. jumped 5% to hit its upper circuit limit, while BEML shares rose 2.95%. Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) advanced 2.47%, and Bharat Electronics Ltd (BEL) gained 2.45%. Bharat Dynamics Ltd (BDL), Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Ltd (GRSE), Astra Microwave, and Solar Industries also saw gains of up to 1.37%.

Government's Push for Self-Reliance

The Ministry of Defence's increased focus on 'Atmanirbhar Bharat' (self-reliant India) mandates that 82% of all procurements must originate from Indian industry. This strategic directive is expected to significantly bolster the domestic defense ecosystem, providing a long-term growth trajectory for local companies.

"We note key points: 1) Focus on combat equipment for both Army and Navy; 2) Proposals related to Light multi-role helicopters likely to aid HAL; 3) DPSUs such as HAL, BEL, Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders and Bharat Earth Movers Limited (BEML) could be positioned to benefit from the proposals approved," stated Goldman Sachs in their assessment of the DAC's decision.

Analyst Recommendations and Outlook

Foreign brokerage Macquarie maintained a positive outlook on India's defense sector, identifying BEL as its preferred stock bet with an 'Outperform' recommendation and a target price of Rs 550. Kotak Institutional Equities highlighted BEL's broad multi-item exposure and anticipated HAL to benefit from new helicopter programs, while BDL is poised to gain from VSHORADS, Indian Air Force (IAF) weapons, and drone ecosystem developments.

Antique Stock Broking echoed these sentiments, naming HAL and BEML as primary beneficiaries of the DAC approvals. Their top defense stock picks include HAL, Solar Industries India Ltd, BEL, and Astra Microwave Products Ltd. The domestic brokerage emphasized that India's defense sector is in a multi-year structural upcycle, driven by consistent growth in budgeted capital expenditure through FY2026-30E, an increasing number of Acceptance of Necessity (AoN) approvals, and the sustained push towards indigenisation.

Upcoming Marquee Orders

In the near term, several significant defense orders are anticipated to be placed, further fueling the sector's growth. These include:

  • The P75I submarine program, estimated at Rs 90,000 crore, likely to be awarded to Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd (MDL).
  • The Quick Reaction Surface-to-Air Missile (QRSAM) system, valued at Rs 30,000 crore, with BEL and BDL expected to be key beneficiaries.
  • The Next-Generation Corvette (NGC) program, worth Rs 33,000 crore, anticipated for GRSE.

These substantial contracts are expected to create meaningful opportunities not only for the primary contractors but also for a wide array of ancillary defense companies, reinforcing the sector's robust growth narrative.
