Indian Markets Rebound: Sensex, Nifty Snap Losing Streak, Experts Cautious

· · 3 min read

Indian equity benchmarks Sensex and Nifty ended a four-session losing streak on Monday, October 26, 2026, driven by buying at lower levels. The Sensex climbed 0.66% to 73,606.75, while the Nifty gained 0.68% to 22,753.20.

Indian equity markets experienced a significant rebound on Monday, October 26, 2026, as both the 30-share BSE Sensex and the NSE Nifty index snapped a four-session losing streak. This recovery was largely attributed to renewed buying interest at lower valuation levels across various stocks, though market experts urge caution.

Indian Equities End Losing Streak

The BSE Sensex advanced 482.92 points, or 0.66%, to close at 73,606.75. Simultaneously, the NSE Nifty index rose 153.20 points, or 0.68%, settling at 22,753.20. Broader-market indices also showed resilience, recovering from their intraday lows to post gains exceeding 1% each.

Mixed Sectoral Performance

Despite the overall market recovery, sectoral performance remained mixed amidst the ongoing earnings season. Key sectors like metal, pharma, and energy stocks saw a notable rebound. Conversely, banking and financial stocks largely remained subdued throughout the trading session.

Expert Analysis: Tentative Recovery Amid Global Concerns

Market analysts highlighted that while the rebound offers some relief, the recovery remains tentative due to several macroeconomic factors. Ajit Mishra, SVP (Research) at Religare Broking, noted that elevated crude oil prices, persistent geopolitical uncertainty, particularly in West Asia, and concerns over the global interest-rate outlook continue to weigh on investor sentiment. Brent crude remained near $115 per barrel, keeping energy supply concerns alive.

Vinod Nair, Head of Research at Geojit Investments, echoed these sentiments, pointing to caution ahead of critical policy decisions from the US Federal Reserve (Fed), European Central Bank (ECB), and Bank of Japan (BoJ). Nair also observed that while mid- and small-cap stocks saw some recovery after a sharp correction last week, investors are remaining selective, favoring companies with strong earnings visibility and attractive valuations. Early quarterly results suggest a commodity-led earnings boost in sectors like power generation, metals, and refining, but higher energy costs and interest rates are expected to moderate overall corporate growth in coming quarters.

Primary Market Activity Provides Support

The primary market continued to show robust activity, providing some underlying support to investor confidence. The Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL)-backed Jio Platforms IPO closed successfully last Friday, oversubscribed 21.58 times, with its shares scheduled to list on Wednesday, October 28. Additionally, five new mainboard IPOs are set to collectively raise approximately Rs 2,580 crore this week.

Ravi Singh, Chief Research Officer at Master Capital Services, indicated a return of retail investors to equities, driven by attractive IPO opportunities, hopes of listing gains, and long-term growth prospects. In September, retail investors injected Rs 10,572 crore into the secondary market and Rs 5,650 crore into the primary market, marking the highest investments in three months.

Outlook: Can the Market Sustain Gains?

Gautam Shah, Founder of Goldilocks Global Research, suggested that such phases of consolidation are a natural part of any bull market. He believes most of the negative factors are already priced in, identifying 22,000–22,500 as a crucial support zone for the Nifty. Shah projects a potential gradual turnaround from current levels, with the Nifty possibly moving towards the upper end of its range, around 25,000–26,000, presenting an excellent opportunity for investors.

However, sustained buying will depend on ongoing market performance, corporate earnings, crude oil price movements, foreign investor outflows, and the evolving global economic landscape.
