India's MoD Signs Rs 53,866 Cr Deal for 8 Indigenous Next-Gen Navy Corvettes

· · 2 min read

The Ministry of Defence recently inked contracts worth Rs 53,866.50 crore with GRSE and GSL to acquire eight Next Generation Corvettes for the Indian Navy. This landmark deal boosts "Aatmanirbhar Bharat" and indigenous warship manufacturing.

In a significant move to bolster India's naval capabilities and domestic defense manufacturing, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) has signed contracts totaling Rs 53,866.50 crore for the acquisition of eight state-of-the-art Next Generation Corvettes (NGCs) for the Indian Navy. The agreements were formalized on November 2 in New Delhi, with Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Limited (GRSE) of Kolkata securing the contract for five corvettes, and Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL) tasked with building the remaining three.

India Bolsters Naval Power with Indigenous Warships

This ambitious project marks a pivotal moment for India's "Aatmanirbhar Bharat" (self-reliant India) initiative. For the first time, these warships will be indigenously designed by the Indian Navy itself, with construction carried out by Defence Public Sector Undertakings (DPSUs) selected through a competitive bidding process. This approach underscores the nation's growing expertise in advanced warship design and construction, reducing reliance on foreign technology.

Advanced Capabilities for Maritime Security

The eight Next Generation Corvettes are designed to significantly enhance the Indian Navy's operational capabilities across multiple domains. Each vessel will be equipped with advanced missile systems, modern weapons, and sophisticated sensor suites, enabling them to conduct missions in air, surface, and underwater environments. Their strategic capabilities include strengthening the protection of vital maritime trade routes, conducting effective anti-surface and anti-submarine warfare operations, and reinforcing coastal defense. Furthermore, these corvettes will support littoral combat, maritime surveillance, and naval presence missions, ensuring comprehensive security for India's extensive coastline and maritime interests.

Boosting Domestic Shipbuilding and Employment

Beyond their military significance, these contracts are expected to provide a substantial boost to India's domestic shipbuilding ecosystem. The project will bring together public sector shipyards, private industries, and micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), fostering a collaborative environment for defense production. The Ministry projects the construction phase to generate approximately 72 lakh person-days of employment directly within the shipyards, and an additional 460 lakh person-days in ancillary industries and MSMEs over the next decade, totaling an estimated 532 lakh person-days of employment. This initiative is a major step towards achieving self-reliance in defense manufacturing, aligning perfectly with the government's 'Make in India' vision by promoting the use of domestically manufactured materials, equipment, and technologies.

The acquisition of these Next Generation Corvettes will not only expand the Indian Navy's future operational readiness but also reinforce India's position as a burgeoning hub for advanced defense manufacturing and innovation.
