Jio Platforms, India's leading digital services company, has announced a substantial strengthening of its financial position, reducing its net debt by nearly 79% year-on-year. According to its Q2 FY27 results, the company's net debt now stands at ₹8,822 crore as of September 30, 2026, a sharp decline from ₹41,161 crore in the corresponding quarter of the previous fiscal year.
Enhanced Financial Flexibility for Expansion
This remarkable debt reduction is attributed to stronger earnings, expanding margins, and improved cash generation. Total borrowings for Jio Platforms stood at ₹58,943 crore, a 20.9% decrease from ₹74,491 crore a year earlier. Concurrently, cash and marketable securities saw a significant 50.4% increase year-on-year, reaching ₹50,121 crore from ₹33,330 crore.
The company's net leverage ratio also improved dramatically to 0.10 times in Q2 FY27, down from 0.55 times in the year-ago quarter. These figures, reported before the impact of any IPO proceeds, highlight Jio's robust financial health, driven by strong EBITDA growth and reduced capital expenditure intensity.
Strong Operational Performance Fuels Debt Reduction
Jio's improved financial standing aligns with its healthy operating performance. Revenue from operations climbed 11.4% year-on-year to ₹40,475 crore in Q2 FY27. EBITDA grew even faster, by 16.6%, to ₹21,879 crore, with the EBITDA margin expanding by 250 basis points to 54.1%.
Profit after tax increased by 13.7% to ₹8,387 crore during the quarter. Furthermore, the company's ability to generate cash after capital expenditure (EBITDA less cash capex) soared by 52.5% to ₹15,449 crore in Q2 FY27, indicating that a larger portion of operating earnings is being retained, further bolstering its financial flexibility.
Strategic Growth Initiatives and Future Outlook
With its strengthened balance sheet, Jio Platforms is now poised to accelerate its next phase of growth, focusing on four key priorities: proprietary technology, digital distribution, enterprise services, and international expansion. The company plans to expand beyond traditional telecom connectivity into high-growth areas such as cloud computing, cybersecurity, Internet of Things (IoT), private 5G solutions, and managed services for enterprises.
Jio also aims to commercialize its proprietary technology in overseas markets through strategic partnerships and an asset-light model. Its extensive consumer-facing digital ecosystem, encompassing entertainment, artificial intelligence, financial services, and productivity tools, offers additional avenues for monetizing its vast customer base.
As of September, Jio boasted 542.4 million customers, including 300 million 5G subscribers. Its broadband customer base reached 30 million, with AirFiber subscribers growing to 15.1 million. While brokerages identify higher Average Revenue Per User (ARPU), broadband expansion, AI, and enterprise services as potential long-term growth drivers, the company has not yet announced a specific new capital expenditure budget for these initiatives.
The primary challenge for Jio Platforms will be to translate its newfound financial strength into diversified new revenue streams, higher returns on capital, and sustainable shareholder value, particularly as its emerging businesses evolve beyond its established telecom operations.
