Jio Platforms Ltd is gearing up for its highly anticipated listing on the National Stock Exchange (NSE) and BSE. Market indicators suggest a strong debut, with grey market trends pointing towards a significant 22% listing pop. If these gains hold, Jio Platforms, commanding a market capitalization of Rs 10.30 lakh crore at the upper end of its IPO price band, could soon challenge Bharti Airtel's Rs 12.34 lakh crore valuation to become India's most valuable telecom stock.
Even with a neutral listing, Jio Platforms would immediately rank as the fourth most-valued firm on Indian stock exchanges, underscoring its substantial market presence and growth potential in digital infrastructure.
Strong Debuts: Past IPO Success Stories
The history of large Indian IPOs presents a mixed bag of fortunes. Among the standout performers on their debut days, LG Electronics India Ltd leads with an impressive 48.24% return, according to Bloomberg data. Following closely, Coal India Ltd delivered a 39.82% gain in November 2010. HDB Financial Services Ltd also saw a respectable 13.64% return.
Other positive listings include the National Stock Exchange of India Ltd, which gained 1.85%, and Tata Capital Ltd, which edged up 1.38% on its first day of trading. These examples highlight the potential for significant investor enthusiasm during a company's market debut.
Challenging Debuts: IPOs That Fell Short
Conversely, several high-profile IPOs have faced a tougher reception. One 97 Communications Ltd (Paytm) experienced the steepest decline, plummeting 27.40% on its listing day. Reliance Power Ltd also saw a significant drop of 17.27%.
The much-anticipated Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) disappointed investors with a 7.77% fall on its debut. Hyundai Motor India Ltd and GIC Re similarly recorded negative returns of 7.77% and 7.16% respectively. A Bloomberg report noted that shares of four companies that raised at least $2 billion in IPOs this decade fell an average of 9.9% on their first day, with NSE being the sole exception to finish higher. The longer-term trend for India's five previous biggest IPOs shows all trading below their initial offer prices.
Analyst Outlook for Jio Platforms
Ahead of Jio Platforms' listing, analysts remain largely optimistic. Nomura has initiated coverage with a 'Buy' rating, setting a target price of Rs 1,340. This valuation, based on 12 times estimated December 2028 Ebitda, aligns with Bharti Airtel and implies a 20% upside from the IPO price of Rs 1,119. The grey market premium (GMP) of Rs 247 per share further reinforces expectations of a 22% listing pop.
Uday Patil, Executive Director at PL Capital, emphasized the significance of Jio's listing, calling it a milestone for the Indian capital market. Patil highlighted Jio's substantial growth opportunities, citing its over 500 million subscribers, extensive telecom network, and ventures into broadband, enterprise technology, cloud, and AI. He noted that factors like attractive higher revenue per user, home broadband, enterprise services, and digital platform monetization could fuel future growth. Patil concluded that while execution will be key, Jio Platforms represents a compelling long-term investment.
