JSW Group Launches Amp Star, Enters India's Electric Truck & Bus Market

· · 2 min read

JSW Group has launched its new Amp Star brand, marking its entry into India's electric commercial vehicle sector. The conglomerate aims to address a significant supply gap and reduce logistics costs, initially serving its substantial internal demand before pursuing B2B orders.

The Sajjan Jindal-led JSW Group has officially entered India's burgeoning electric commercial vehicle market with the introduction of its new brand, Amp Star. This strategic move aims to leverage deeper sourcing synergies across JSW's diverse businesses and position the conglomerate as a key player in the nation's push towards electric mobility.

According to Parth Jindal, Director of JSW Group, Amp Star will initially focus on fulfilling the group's substantial internal demand for electric trucks and buses. "JSW Group requires 10,000 trucks," Jindal stated, highlighting the immediate need within their own steel, cement, paints, and power operations. This internal demand will serve as a foundational customer base before the brand expands to pursue business-to-business (B2B) orders from other conglomerates.

Addressing India's EV Commercial Vehicle Supply Gap

The decision to enter the electric commercial vehicle segment was driven by a recognized supply deficit in the Indian market. "There is just not enough capacity in India for electric trucks," Parth Jindal noted, explaining that many industry players are eager to transition to electric fleets but face limited supply. JSW Group sees this as a significant opportunity to not only meet a critical market need but also to dramatically cut logistics costs across its own commodity-intensive businesses, where margins are often thin.

"When we looked at our own businesses—steel, cement, paints and power—and the number of trucks we utilise, we saw how that cost keeps rising every year. Most of our businesses are commodities and margins are always thin," Jindal explained, emphasizing the potential for significant cost reduction through electrification.

Investment and Future Outlook

JSW Group has committed a substantial investment of Rs 2,500 crore (approximately $300 million USD) to establish a commercial vehicle manufacturing facility in Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar, Maharashtra. This facility boasts an annual production capacity of 15,000 units, which is fungible between electric buses and trucks. At full capacity, the factory is projected to achieve a top line of Rs 12,000 crore (approximately $1.4 billion USD).

The company plans to offer flexible charging solutions, including both battery swapping and fast-charging options, to cater to diverse customer requirements. With trucks and buses accounting for roughly 40% of India's total diesel consumption, JSW's entry with Amp Star represents a significant step towards decarbonizing the country's logistics and public transport sectors, promising a more attractive business model compared to traditional ventures.
