Knowledge Marine & Engineering Works Stock Plunges 80% After 1:5 Split

· · 2 min read

Knowledge Marine & Engineering Works (KMEW) shares showed an apparent 80% drop in trading apps today after its 1:5 stock split. The adjustment, effective November 6, 2026, converted each Rs 5 face value share into five Re 1 shares to boost liquidity.

Shares of Knowledge Marine & Engineering Works (KMEW) displayed a dramatic 80% decline in some trading applications today, a move that initially caused alarm among investors. However, this sharp price adjustment is not a true loss but rather the direct result of a pre-announced 1:5 stock split that became effective on November 6, 2026.

The corporate action involved subdividing each existing equity share with a face value of Rs 5 into five new equity shares, each with a face value of Re 1. This means that while the per-share price decreased significantly, the total value of an investor's holding remained unchanged, as the number of shares they own increased proportionally.

Understanding the KMEW Stock Split

KMEW had previously announced its intention to issue subdivided stocks for eligible shareholders. The record date for determining entitlement to these new shares was set for Friday, November 6, 2026. Consequently, the stock price was adjusted in the same 1:5 ratio.

For instance, if KMEW shares closed at Rs 3,149.75 on Thursday, they would open at approximately Rs 640.95 on Friday after the split. This mathematical adjustment accounts for the apparent 80% fall. In early trade today, the stock saw a further modest dip of 4.5% to Rs 611.75, but the primary change was due to the split.

Impact on Investors and Liquidity

Existing investors holding KMEW shares in their demat accounts on the record date are eligible for the corporate action. An investor who previously held one share now possesses five. The main objective of a stock split is to improve the stock's liquidity and make it more affordable for a wider range of investors, potentially increasing trading volume.

Marquee investor Ashish Kacholia held 5,74,721 equity shares (pre-adjustment) or a 2.27% stake in KMEW, valued at Rs 184.2 crore as of Friday's open. The company has a history of strong performance, delivering multibagger returns to investors, including a 160% gain from its adjusted 52-week low a year ago and an astounding 17,500% increase over the past five years.

Recent Financial Performance

In the September 2026 quarter, Knowledge Marine & Engineering Works reported a net profit of Rs 11.90 crore, with an EBITDA of Rs 16.28 crore, on a total income of Rs 50.17 crore. These financial results underscore the company's underlying operational strength despite the recent share price adjustment due to the split.
