Impact of Global Oil Developments
These domestic price updates coincide with an important international development: the United States has issued a 60-day general license. This authorization permits transactions related to the production, transportation, and sale of Iranian crude oil, petroleum products, and petrochemicals.
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced the license following productive diplomatic discussions in Switzerland. This move could significantly benefit India, which imports over 80% of its crude oil requirements. Experts anticipate that the license may help reduce India's import bill, alleviate domestic inflation, and enhance the profitability of state-backed oil marketing companies (OMCs).
On Tuesday, Brent Crude was trading at $78.08 per barrel, while US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) Crude stood at $74.16 per barrel. Despite the diplomatic progress, India continues to monitor LPG supplies closely due to ongoing geopolitical tensions, particularly as the nation sources over 40% of its crude and 90% of its LPG imports from West Asian countries like Saudi Arabia and Qatar.
The Indian government persists in offering subsidies through initiatives such as the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY), which aims to lower the effective cost of gas connections for eligible low-income households. Over 10 crore families have already received gas connections under this scheme.
