Speaking at FutureLab, Manara emphasized that the industry's focus is shifting from intricate engineering workarounds to fundamental business strengths like speed, execution, and robust distribution strategies.
The Evolving AI Product Landscape
Manara noted that in the early stages of AI development, startups invested significant effort in building 'scaffolding' around nascent models to compensate for their limitations. However, with foundation models now demonstrating far greater reliability in reasoning, following instructions, and autonomous tool use, this approach is no longer sustainable. Founders are increasingly trusting models to make decisions and execute tasks, with the primary challenge now centered on providing the right tools and effective evaluation systems.
This rapid improvement in model capabilities means that businesses built on temporary model limitations risk quickly losing their market edge. Manara echoed OpenAI CEO Sam Altman's advice: founders should embrace, not fear, the release of smarter models. He suggested that truly defensible AI companies are those whose products inherently improve as the underlying AI becomes more sophisticated.
Economics of AI: Cheaper Inference, New Opportunities
The economic landscape of AI is also undergoing a significant transformation. Manara highlighted that advancements in smaller, more cost-effective models are unlocking applications previously deemed too expensive for widespread deployment. Lower inference costs enable startups to offer larger free tiers, implement more agentic workflows, and experiment with use cases that were commercially unviable just months prior.
This combination of enhanced performance and reduced cost empowers companies to innovate in product design and customer acquisition without incurring substantial increases in compute expenses.

With intelligence becoming more accessible, true differentiation for AI startups now lies in other areas. Manara asserted that factors such as strong distribution networks, a deep understanding of customer needs, superior product quality, and flawless execution will increasingly determine market winners. While AI has dramatically shortened the development cycle for software, he cautioned that it has not simplified the arduous task of building enduring companies.
Developing production-grade AI systems still demands rigorous evaluation frameworks, robust guardrails, optimized latency, sophisticated memory systems, and thorough testing—capabilities that extend far beyond a compelling demo.
Reshaping Startup Organization and Roles
The AI boom is also redefining organizational structures within startups. Manara pointed to instances of companies with fewer than ten employees generating tens of millions in revenue by leveraging AI across various functions, including engineering, hiring, customer support, and internal operations. He also observed a convergence of traditional roles, with engineers increasingly taking on product responsibilities and product managers contributing code.
Simultaneously, specialized AI engineering skills in areas like model evaluation, orchestration, and deployment are becoming highly valuable. Emerging roles, such as Forward Deployment Engineers who integrate AI systems directly with enterprise clients, are also gaining prominence.
For founders, the clear implication is that as AI models continue to advance and become more affordable, competitive advantage will depend less on access to frontier intelligence itself, and more on a company's agility in translating that intelligence into products and services that customers are willing to pay for.
