Lucknow Leads National Clean Air Rankings
Lucknow has emerged as the top-performing city in India's 2026 Swachh Vayu Sarvekshan, the national clean air survey for cities with populations exceeding one million. The Uttar Pradesh capital scored 198 out of a possible 200 points, narrowly beating Indore, which garnered 197 points. This marks a significant shift, as Indore, known for its consistent top ranking in sanitation surveys, slipped to second place after achieving a perfect score in the 2025 edition.
Indore's Slip: Focus on PM10 Standards
Indore's Mayor, Pushyamitra Bhargava, attributed the city's one-point deficit primarily to its performance in PM10 particle standards. Despite a lower average annual PM10 concentration (76 µg/m³) compared to Lucknow (135 µg/m³) in 2025–26, the survey's weighted parameters meant Indore's performance in this specific area was insufficient to retain the top position. High vehicular density was also cited as a key challenge for the Madhya Pradesh city.
Remedial Measures Planned
In response to the survey results, Mayor Bhargava announced plans to intensify anti-pollution measures in Indore. These initiatives will include stepping up public awareness campaigns like "Red Light On, Engine Off" at traffic signals, promoting the adoption of electric vehicles, and expanding the operation of e-buses. The city aims to address vehicular emissions and improve PM10 levels to reclaim the top spot in future surveys.

The Swachh Vayu Sarvekshan evaluates cities on a comprehensive set of parameters, extending beyond just ambient pollution concentrations. The assessment includes actions taken to curb pollution sources, effectiveness of monitoring systems, public awareness initiatives, and certain air-quality indicators. This holistic approach means a city's overall efforts in air quality management contribute to its final score, rather than solely relying on raw pollution numbers.
Broader Impact and State Performance
The 2026 rankings were unveiled at the fifth edition of the Swachh Vayu Sarvekshan Awards, a key component of the National Clean Air Programme (NCAP). Following Lucknow and Indore in the Category-I segment (cities over 10 lakh population), Jabalpur secured third place with 195 points, while Bhopal and Agra tied for fourth with 192 points each.
Beyond the largest cities, Odisha's Rourkela led the 3–10 lakh population segment with 198.5 points, followed by Uttar Pradesh's Firozabad and Andhra Pradesh's Guntur. Uttar Pradesh demonstrated a strong overall performance, with 16 of its cities featuring in the national clean air rankings, underscoring Lucknow's achievement as a significant milestone for the state.
