First Sea Shipment to Australia Marks New Export Chapter
In a landmark development for India's agricultural exports, 18 metric tonnes of Bihar's GI-tagged Mithila Makhana (fox nuts) have been shipped to Australia via sea for the first time. Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal announced this significant achievement on August 10, 2026, highlighting its impact on global market access for Indian regional products.
The consignment, sourced directly from farmers in Darbhanga, was exported with crucial support from the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA). This direct procurement model has provided growers with nearly 18 percent higher returns compared to prevailing market prices, reducing their dependence on intermediaries and ensuring greater benefits from international demand.
The Significance of Mithila Makhana's GI Tag
Mithila Makhana received its Geographical Indication (GI) tag in 2022, a recognition that legally protects its unique association with the Mithila region and strengthens its brand identity. This designation has been instrumental in positioning makhana as a high-value agricultural product rather than solely a traditional regional snack.
Minister Goyal previously welcomed the GI recognition, emphasizing its potential to empower farmers with better earnings. The Central government has also established the Makhana Board in Bihar to further boost production, processing, value addition, and marketing efforts for the sector, backed by allocated funds for infrastructure development and farmer support.
Expanding Global Reach and Farmer Empowerment
The Australia shipment is part of a broader strategy to expand Mithila Makhana's international presence. Prior consignments have already reached markets in Canada, the United States, and New Zealand, demonstrating growing global demand for this unique Indian produce. APEDA continues to collaborate with exporters to enhance Bihar's agricultural export ecosystem.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has consistently championed makhana as an Indian product with significant global potential.
