Residents across Tamil Nadu are bracing for a significant shift in weather as the Southwest Monsoon is set to strengthen, bringing widespread rainfall and thunderstorms to many parts of the state. Starting June 21, 2026, Chennai and at least nine other districts are expected to experience substantial rainfall, offering much-needed relief from the prevailing warm and humid conditions.
Widespread Rainfall Forecast for Southern India
According to the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Chennai, an upper-air circulation and a trough continue to influence weather patterns over southern India. These systems are creating favorable conditions for enhanced rainfall activity across the region.
The weather office has specifically forecast heavy rain in isolated places across more than ten districts, with a particular focus on the Western Ghats region. Districts likely to receive heavy rainfall include the Nilgiris, Erode, Salem, Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri, Coimbatore, Theni, Dindigul, Kanyakumari, and the ghat areas of Tirunelveli.
For Chennai and its suburbs, light to moderate showers, accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning, are anticipated. This expected rainfall is projected to bring down maximum temperatures by 4-5 degrees Celsius in several districts, providing considerable respite.
Monsoon Activity Gathers Momentum
This latest meteorological development is particularly significant given the patchy start to India's monsoon season this year. Many regions across the country have reported rainfall deficits during June, raising concerns among farmers and water managers.
However, recent forecasts suggest that monsoon activity is now gathering momentum over southern and western parts of the country. Fresh weather systems are expected to improve rainfall distribution in the coming days. Tamil Nadu has already experienced pockets of intense rainfall, with Kalasapakkam in Tiruvannamalai district recording 9 cm and Kakkudi in Ramanathapuram receiving 8 cm during the 24 hours ending Saturday morning.
Fishermen Advised Caution
In light of the strengthening monsoon, fishermen have been advised to exercise caution. Squally winds, with speeds ranging from 40-50 kmph, are expected along the Tamil Nadu coast, the Gulf of Mannar, and adjoining Comorin areas, posing potential hazards for marine activities.
