NBFC Fixed Deposit Rates Soar to 8.50% in 2026: Muthoot Capital, Manipal Housing Lead

· · 3 min read

Non-Banking Financial Companies (NBFCs) like Muthoot Capital Services and Manipal Housing Finance are offering fixed deposit rates up to 8.50% in 2026. Investors should carefully compare these higher returns with bank FDs, considering credit ratings and the absence of DICGC deposit insurance.

NBFC Fixed Deposit Rates Attract Investors with Higher Returns

Non-Banking Financial Companies (NBFCs) are emerging as an attractive option for investors seeking higher interest rates on fixed deposits (FDs) compared to traditional bank offerings. In 2026, several leading NBFCs are providing rates ranging from approximately 6.70% to an impressive 8.50% per annum for general citizens, with senior citizens often receiving an additional 0.25% to 0.50%.

However, investors must exercise caution as NBFC FDs differ significantly from bank FDs, particularly regarding risk and deposit insurance. Unlike bank deposits, NBFC fixed deposits are not covered by the Deposit Insurance and Credit Guarantee Corporation (DICGC) framework. This critical distinction means that in the event of an NBFC's failure, deposits may not be protected up to Rs 5 lakh, as they are with banks.

Top NBFC Fixed Deposit Offerings

Among the NBFCs offering competitive rates, Muthoot Capital Services stands out with the highest rate of 8.50% for three- and five-year deposits. Manipal Housing Finance also presents strong returns, offering 8.25% for one- and three-year tenures. Sundaram Finance provides rates up to 8.07% for three-year deposits.

  • Muthoot Capital Services: Up to 8.50% (3 & 5 years)
  • Manipal Housing Finance: Up to 8.25% (1 & 3 years)
  • Sundaram Finance: Up to 8.07% (3 years)
  • Shriram Finance: Up to 7.60% (3 & 5 years)
  • Bajaj Finance: Up to 7.30% (5 years)
  • PNB Housing Finance: Up to 7.10% (3 & 5 years)

Other notable NBFCs like ICICI Home Finance, HDFC Ltd., LIC Housing Finance, and Mahindra Finance also offer competitive rates, typically in the 6.70% to 7.15% range depending on the tenure.

Comparing NBFCs with Bank Fixed Deposits

While NBFCs offer enticing rates, it's crucial for investors to compare these with bank FDs. Small finance banks (SFBs) often provide some of the highest bank FD rates, with several offering 8% or more on specific tenures. For instance, Suryoday SFB and Utkarsh SFB both offer up to 8.10% on certain deposits, while Jana SFB and Shivalik SFB offer up to 8.00%.

When comparing, senior citizens may find additional benefits, as banks typically offer an extra 0.25% to 0.75% on their FD schemes.

Key Considerations for NBFC FD Investors

A higher interest rate alone should not be the sole determinant for investment. Investors must conduct thorough due diligence:

  • Credit Rating: Evaluate the NBFC's credit rating and overall financial health. A higher rating indicates lower risk.
  • Deposit Insurance: Remember that NBFC FDs lack DICGC insurance, unlike bank FDs.
  • Tenure and Withdrawal Rules: Understand the deposit tenure, whether it’s cumulative or non-cumulative, and the conditions for premature withdrawal.
  • Taxation: Factor in the taxability of interest income. Compare post-tax returns with other fixed-income instruments like debt mutual funds or bonds.

Always verify the latest interest rates directly with the respective NBFC before making any investment decisions, as rates can change without prior notice.

Regulatory Changes on the Horizon

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) is reportedly considering harmonizing interest rate rules across various regulated lenders, including NBFCs. This move aims to enhance monetary transmission and improve transparency for borrowers. Proposed changes could require NBFCs to adopt recognized external or formal internal benchmarks for floating-rate loans, potentially standardizing rate-reset timelines and making borrowing costs more predictable.
