Nifty, Sensex Poised for Muted Start Today; Key Levels to Watch

· · 3 min read

Indian equities are expected to open steadily on Monday, August 10, influenced by firm Asian cues and a slight rise in GIFT Nifty. Investors will monitor geopolitical developments and Q1FY27 earnings as key indices face resistance.

The Indian stock market is anticipated to begin the trading day on Monday with a muted sentiment, as indicated by GIFT Nifty Futures, which saw a marginal increase of 4.50 points, reaching 24,659.50. This cautious opening follows varied global cues, prompting investors to remain selective amidst ongoing geopolitical and macroeconomic shifts.

Global and Regional Influences on Market Opening

Global markets provided mixed signals for the domestic opening. US stocks advanced on Friday after a jobs report indicated a shedding of jobs, easing concerns about a near-term interest rate hike by the US Federal Reserve. This positive sentiment carried over to Asian markets on Monday, with Nikkei jumping nearly 2 percent, and Hang Seng and KOSPI also registering gains. However, the Indian market's initial steady note suggests investors are weighing these international trends against domestic factors and earnings season developments.

Commodities and Currency Movements

In commodity markets, crude oil prices edged higher due to lack of progress in Gulf peace talks, with Brent crude adding 0.9 percent to $84.32 a barrel and US crude rising 0.7 percent to $78.74. Gold held steady at $4,342 an ounce, while the dollar index remained largely unchanged at 99.6. These movements, particularly in crude oil and geopolitical tensions in West Asia, are expected to keep investors cautious.

FII and DII Activity

Provisional data from Friday showed foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) as net sellers of domestic stocks, offloading Rs 480.24 crore. Conversely, domestic institutional investors (DIIs) were net buyers, injecting Rs 235.56 crore into Indian equities. Despite Friday's FPI selling, overseas investors have been net buyers for the first week of August, pouring in Rs 12,921 crore, reflecting sustained confidence driven by easing geopolitical concerns.

Nifty50 Outlook and Key Levels

Technical analysis indicates that the Nifty50 formed a Doji candlestick pattern on weekly charts, suggesting indecisiveness. While the short-term outlook remains positive, a sustained uptrend is likely only after breaking above the 24,700/79,100 resistance zone. Above this, Nifty could target 24,800-24,850 and potentially 25,000-25,100. On the downside, immediate support is seen at 24,600-78,400, with a breakdown potentially leading to 24,500-24,450 and 24,200.

Sensex Technical Levels to Monitor

The Sensex formed a bearish candlestick, indicating some profit booking, but continues to trade above its key exponential moving averages, maintaining a positive broader trend. The Relative Strength Index (RSI) at 58.68 also supports bullish momentum despite recent weakness. Immediate support for Sensex is placed at 77,900–78,100, while the 78,800–79,000 range acts as an immediate resistance zone.

Nifty Bank Analysis and Support/Resistance

Nifty Bank is consolidating within the 58,248–57,353 range, holding above its 20-day EMA, suggesting a positive underlying structure despite a lack of strong directional momentum (ADX remaining flat). The immediate resistance for Bank Nifty is in the 58,200-58,300 zone; a sustainable breakout could push it towards 58,700 and 59,100. Key support levels are at 57,300-57,200, followed by 57,500, and then 56,800–56,500.
