Union Minister Nitin Gadkari Touts 100% Ethanol Car for India
Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari has reaffirmed his strong support for ethanol-blended fuels and flex-fuel vehicles, announcing that a 100% ethanol-powered car is set to debut in India soon. Speaking at an event in Delhi, Gadkari revealed he has received an invitation for the launch of a Toyota Innova model in October that will operate entirely on flex-fuel.
This upcoming vehicle, capable of running on 100% ethanol, is projected to generate 60% electricity while in operation. Gadkari highlighted its potential to make fuel costs equivalent to approximately ₹25 per litre compared to petrol prices, alongside significantly reducing pollution.
Economic and Environmental Benefits of Ethanol Fuel
Gadkari stressed the widespread adoption of ethanol globally, noting its use in 19 countries without reported vehicle complaints. He also underscored the substantial economic advantages for Indian farmers, citing that the decision to produce ethanol from maize has already generated ₹45,000 crore for farmers in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar.
The Minister acknowledged potential resistance from industries whose business models might be disrupted by a shift towards ethanol, but reiterated the government's commitment to policies that prioritize farmer welfare and environmental sustainability.
Promoting Bike Taxis for Employment Generation
Beyond ethanol, Gadkari advocated for the promotion of bike taxi services across the country. He described these services as a rapidly expanding, low-cost travel option for short distances and a significant source of employment, particularly for rural youth.
Gadkari urged state transport ministers to support platforms that enable individuals with two-wheelers or four-wheelers to offer taxi services. He cited the example of Bengaluru-based Rapido, which he claimed employed 3.5 crore people following a policy approval, illustrating the potential for millions of jobs without substantial investment.
