NSE's Market Leadership and Scale
Incorporated in 1992, the NSE holds a dominant position as India's largest stock exchange. It leads in total turnover across both the cash market and equity derivatives, a position it has maintained from FY01 through FY26 and into the first quarter of FY27. Globally, the NSE ranked as the largest multi-asset class exchange among leading listed groups by the number of trades in cash equities and equity derivatives contracts during FY26.
The exchange's extensive reach is evident in its scale. As of March 2026, NSE boasted 129.09 million unique registered investors and 3,228 traded entities. Its clearing arm, NSE Clearing Ltd (NCL), is a critical component, handling 88.42% to 91.04% of cleared value across market segments. Furthermore, NSE facilitated $20.06 billion through IPOs in FY26, with 219 new listings, underscoring its pivotal role in capital formation. The benchmark Nifty indices also hold significant sway, with Nifty-linked funds representing 72.53% of the assets under management for India's index funds and exchange-traded funds.
Role as a Market Institution
Beyond its commercial operations, the NSE functions as a first-level regulator in the Indian market. Its responsibilities include ensuring fair, transparent, and unrestricted access to the stock market for all participants—investors, issuers, and intermediaries. The exchange is also tasked with maintaining orderly and efficient market functioning and safeguarding investor interests. The upcoming listing marks a significant milestone for this crucial market infrastructure institution.
