SBI Reports Strong Q1 Performance, Shares Rally
India's largest public sector lender, State Bank of India (SBI), announced an impressive 10.23% increase in its net profit for the June quarter, reaching ₹21,121 crore. This strong performance defied earlier brokerage predictions that anticipated a decline in Q1 net profit.
Following the positive earnings report, SBI's stock, which had been trading flat, saw a significant surge. Shares rallied 3.6% to hit a high of ₹1,124.40 on the BSE, contributing to a 7.6% return over the past month, outperforming the Sensex's flat returns during the same period.
Key Financial Highlights from Q1 FY27:
- Net Profit: Increased by 10.23% year-on-year to ₹21,121 crore.
- Net Interest Income (NII): Grew 14.88% to ₹46,992 crore, surpassing analyst estimates of 13% growth.
- Net Interest Margin (NIM): Improved by 17 basis points (bps) sequentially to 3.01% in the June quarter, up from 2.93% in the March quarter. This also exceeded analyst expectations for stable or marginally falling margins.
- Gross Non-Performing Asset (NPA) Ratio: Showed significant improvement, falling 36 bps year-on-year to 1.47%.
- Net NPA Ratio: Also improved by 9 bps year-on-year, standing at 0.38%.
- Provision Coverage Ratio (PCR): Stood at 74.20%, with PCR including additional unpaid claims and advances (AUCA) at 91.82%.
- Slippage Ratio: Improved 18 bps year-on-year to 0.57%.
- Credit Cost: Maintained at 0.27%.
- Return on Asset (ROA): Recorded at 1.11%.
- Return on Equity (ROE): Stood at 17.87%.
