SEBI Extends India's F&O Trading Hours to 3:40 PM Starting August 3

· · 2 min read

India's Securities and Exchange Board (SEBI) will extend equity derivatives (F&O) trading hours by 10 minutes, pushing the closing time to 3:40 PM, effective August 3. The regulator also introduces a new Closing Auction Session for F&O-eligible stocks.

The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) has announced significant revisions to India stock market timings, primarily extending trading hours for the equity derivatives (F&O) segment. These changes, aimed at improving price discovery, enhancing market efficiency, and aligning with global practices, will come into effect on August 3.

F&O Trading Extended to 3:40 PM

Under the revised framework, trading in the equity derivatives (F&O) segment will see an extension of 10 minutes. From August 3 onwards, F&O trading will continue until 3:40 PM, a change from the previous closing time. This adjustment is a key part of SEBI's efforts to modernize India's financial markets.

Introduction of Closing Auction Session (CAS)

A notable new feature is the introduction of a Closing Auction Session (CAS) specifically for F&O-eligible (Category I) stocks in the equity cash segment. This session is designed to ensure a fair and transparent closing price through an auction mechanism.

  • Regular Trading: For F&O-eligible stocks, regular trading will conclude at 3:15 PM.
  • Transition Period: A five-minute transition will follow, from 3:15 PM to 3:20 PM.
  • CAS Order Entry I: The first phase of order entry for the auction will run from 3:20 PM to 3:25 PM.
  • CAS Order Entry II: The second phase, from 3:25 PM to 3:30 PM, will restrict modifications or cancellations of market orders. SEBI has also incorporated a random closure within the final two minutes of this phase.
  • Order Matching: Order matching will occur between 3:30 PM and 3:35 PM, at which point the auction-discovered price will become the official closing price for these stocks.

Revised Pre-Open Session Timings

SEBI has also adjusted the pre-open session timings for the market. The order entry period will now be from 9:00 AM to 9:07 AM, followed by order matching from 9:07 AM to 9:15 AM. The regular trading session will continue to commence at 9:15 AM as before.

Impact on Other Market Segments

It is important to note that the revised framework does not alter the trading hours for non-F&O equity cash stocks. Trading in these segments will maintain its existing schedule, concluding at 3:30 PM.

Why the Changes?

According to SEBI, these modifications are being implemented with several objectives in mind: to improve the process of price discovery, enhance overall market efficiency, and bring India's market structure more in line with global best practices observed in major international exchanges.
