The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) has cautioned investors against falling victim to fraudulent stock tips and trading calls disseminated through invitation-only WhatsApp groups. The regulator highlighted that unregistered operators are posing as market experts, using misleading profit claims to attract unsuspecting individuals.
How Fraudulent WhatsApp Stock Tip Scams Operate
According to a press release issued by SEBI on October 22, these scam groups frequently operate using overseas WhatsApp numbers. They promote unauthorized buy and sell recommendations under the guise of providing 'free investor education'. A common tactic involves some group members coordinating with operators to post fabricated profit claims and lavish praise on the supposed experts, creating a false impression of genuine success.
SEBI has termed this deceptive practice as “astroturfing,” where manufactured support is used to influence investors into acting on unverified stock tips and trading calls. Operators often leverage testimonials, purported trading success stories, and messages from other members to build credibility.
The 'New Group' Tactic
A recurring strategy employed by these operators involves inviting members to a new group after an existing one is suspended by authorities or social media platforms. Members receive messages from new numbers claiming the previous group was banned due to platform restrictions, then are invited to join a 'replacement' group promising continued daily stock recommendations and trading guidance. SEBI strongly advises investors to treat such invitations as red flags and exit the groups immediately.
SEBI's Safety Guidelines for Investors
Amid growing concerns over unauthorized investment advice and misleading claims on digital platforms, SEBI has issued clear guidelines to help investors protect themselves:
- Avoid Unknown Groups: Do not join invitation-only WhatsApp groups run by unknown individuals or those claiming to be stock market experts, especially if they operate through overseas numbers.
- Question Profit Claims: Be wary of profit claims, praise, or trade confirmations posted by other group members, as these are often deliberately fabricated.
- Verify Platforms: Do not open accounts on, or transfer money to, trading platforms and applications recommended through such groups.
- Protect Information: Never share details of your holdings or trading accounts with group operators.
- Deal with Registered Intermediaries: Always deal only with SEBI-registered intermediaries and use authentic trading applications. The registration status of market intermediaries can be verified through SEBI’s official website, and information on trading applications is available via its investor support portal.
Key Warning Signs to Watch For
Investors should be vigilant for several red flags, including unsolicited invitations to closed WhatsApp groups, purported experts operating through overseas numbers, exaggerated profit claims, and requests to move to new groups after a previous one is suspended. SEBI reiterates the critical importance of verifying credentials before relying on any investment advice, particularly when recommendations are circulated through private messaging groups.
